Friends use popular site to urge city attorney to run for county post

Facebook is many things. It's a way to find old friends, kill time or post funny pictures of your pets. It is also now a way to launch political campaigns.
Last week, two friends of St. Paul City Attorney John Choi put up a Facebook page urging him to run for Ramsey County attorney. Susan Gaertner is stepping down from the post after four terms to run for governor, and another potential candidate, St. Paul resident and Scott County prosecutor Cory Tennison, recently decided against a run.
Since then, more than 150 (and counting) people have joined the Facebook group, including Tennison, Duluth Mayor Don Ness, St. Paul first lady Connie Coleman, aides to Ramsey County commissioners and St. Paul City Council members, union officials and a quartet of state DFL lawmakers: John Lesch, Yvonne Prettner Solon, Sheldon Johnson and Nora Slawik.
Choi said he is considering running, and it sounds like he's taking a long, hard look at a campaign. No announcement is imminent, though, and Choi said he's still talking to people and weighing the effect of a candidacy on his family. He also said he loves his job as city attorney.
"I'm not a Facebook person. I've never been on it before, but it's a pretty powerful tool," Choi said. "My (potential) candidacy ... attracted over 125 people through the Easter weekend. That's really encouraging and very humbling."
It's yet another example of politicking in the Internet age, the power of which was demonstrated by President Barack
Obama's sophisticated Internet-based campaign fundraising and volunteer operations. Larry Jacobs, director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute, said social sites such as Facebook and MySpace can be a draw for candidates.
"It's all that networking that goes on on the Internet. The 21st-century crowd thinks of the Internet as digitized bulletin boards," Jacobs said.
Lawyer David Schultz, Roseville City Council Member Tammy Pust and Assistant Ramsey County Attorney Dave Pinto also are in the mix to run. Pinto's campaign has a Facebook page, and Pust set one up for her city council campaign. But using Facebook to test the political waters before making a decision — Choi has never run for office before — may be something new.
"This is, I think, a new way (to use Facebook). I haven't seen anything like this before," Jacobs said.
Many in heavily Democratic Ramsey County had seen Tennison as a frontrunner.
In 2006, Tennison waged a competitive bid to wrest the DFL endorsement from Gaertner. He's spent much of the time since preparing for the 2010 race, racking up an impressive list of DFL supporters. The decision to step away was something of a surprise.
Tennison said this week that two things changed his mind — the recent and unexpected death of his father-in-law, and the birth of his son Thursday. He already has a 2-year-old daughter.
"I, first and foremost, want to be a good husband and a good dad," Tennison said.
And he has enthusiastically thrown his support behind Choi.
"I believe he will be a candidate. John is my friend. John and I have a lot of supporters in common. I think if John gets in, he will be the DFL-endorsed candidate," Tennison said.
John Choi is the head of a city attorneys office that has a history of hiding the truth of housing atrocities.
John serves a politically rouge entity and is nothing more than a puppet in the scheme of things. He does not represent the best interest of the citizens of Saint Paul nor will he represent the best interest of the citizens of Ramsey County. John represents the staus quo, something most of us are sick of!
In all fairness, it is rumoured he has warned the city council and mayor that the policy's in housing code enforcement is a substantial risk to the city. John, if you didn't make a statement like this to the city's leadership I'd sure appreciate it if you would come here and say it isn't so. I don't think you can do that can you?
Google John Choi, See what comes up
These Lawyers Franchise each other, Cory Tennison is a Sherburne Co. Attorney, lives in St.Paul

Bob,
John doesn't read this blog. As a matter of fact, not a lot of people do. I see you didn't make the top ten in the Twin Cities once again.
I know John very well. Good catholic school boy. Went to catholic grade school, high school and college. Nicest guy you'll meet.
Nothing like Martin describes him or Bob. He is a very smart attorney that stood out early in his career and made partner at his firm early.
He is a sound manager too with the respect of his staff. He will make a fine county attorney.
You folks on here need to start standing for something and putting ideas and candidates forth. Sitting back misspelling your rants and being against everything is a great way to keep marginalizing yourself.

My response;
Eric, you are full of shit as usual. I bet John was reading when I done a story on his home with code violation. I sent him an invitation. :-)
You wish this blog wasn't popular Eric. There is NO blog in the metro area that has spent the capitol this blog has to gain readers.
I promise to be at any public meeting John should have should he decide to run for the Ramsey County Attorneys Office. He will look very bad when he can't answer some very serious questions.
And once again Eric this blog will grow even bigger due to the invitations I distribute to call attention to John Choi's udder disregard for the civil rights of the citizens of Saint Paul.
I have decided to take a proactive approach to stopping the civil rights violations of home owners. Before the month is over all of us here will witness the fruits of my labor.
Alright, you work hard but, you're not the only one. I was just reading the Washington Post a couple weeks ago and they went state by state ranking the the best blog that have a political aspect (as opposed to cooking). Yours is not on the radar. The one I really dislike the most made the list.
Minnesota List:
MNPublius
Minnesota Democrats Exposed
Minnesota Progressive Project

Dusty Trice
True North

The Uptake
Hey, Martin contributes to Uptake I believe.
No A-Democracy?!?!
Must be a conspiracy against landlords.
Eric
May not be the most popular Eric. However, my guess is it is the most read blog by code enforcement and some city bureaucrats. :-)
A Democracy was nominated "Minnesota Blog of the Day" by City Pages sometime ago.
Now there's a statement I can't spin or argue against. You may indeed be the most popular read piece in that Department.
So, when are moving up to Fargo?
Eric
I am not going. The position was filled. When and if I move it wouldn't be the end of this forum. I can post to this thing from the space shuttle. :-)
I have something else to add to this conversation.
If you have an interest in housing in the City of Saint Paul, this blog is the most informative resource in this area. So Eric, the readership here is targeted to Saint Paul and mostly housing. There is no way to make the comparison you made with these other blogs honestly.
NONE of the blogs you mentioned here come close to this blog on the subject of housing.
I should also mention, City Attorney John Choi had some serious code violations on his home that went unrepaired for months. Violations that were a public threat to safety.
John had a carport with a broken support post. If a child had been playing in the alley near this carport and bumped that post the carport may of come down on them. It may of come down on someone at any time, it was that bad. John was reported for these violations and unlike a common citizen in Saint Paul nothing came of it.
Some of Eric's comments have a negative orientation.
I'm wondering if there might be an inferiority complex because he isn't white like a tampax.
I've been accused of thinking I'm better or smarter than everyone else but never of having an inferiority complex. I doubt it. Eric likes being black and wouldn't have it any other way.
I think in some of your brains, you hate so much that you can't imagine anyone other than a white person, being comfortable with who they are.
Keep reading, I'll educate you on a lot of things you obviously refused to learn.
Eric
