Regarding "Police ask for help in North Side slaying" (June 12): What is most shocking about the recent unnecessary slaying of a vibrant 14-year-old girl, Charez Jones, is the inability of Minneapolis and its leadership to allocate public safety dollars in a reasonable and responsible manner.
A recent announcement that the city will allocate extra resources to combat panhandling downtown was preceded by an article describing the annoyance of sitting outside at Nicollet Mall and being inconvenienced by a panhandler.
Panhandling is an annoying quality-of-life crime, but let us take stock for a moment. Those additional police personnel should be patrolling the areas where crime is not a nuisance, but a matter of life and death. So, as crime rates climb through the summer on the North Side, I apologize for not being concerned about panhandling downtown.
SARAH WALKER, MINNEAPOLIS
We have a budget deficit here in Saint Paul of over 15 million and the leadership here thinks it is more important to build a police precinct to the tune of 10 million dollars.
Do the police need a $10 million dollar castle?
Wouldn't a 1 million dollar mansion suffice?
Then we could throw money at the elderly who will be threaten with condemnation of their homes because they can't repair them due to over burden property tax.
We could spend the money on the budget deficit.
I am glad these people in local City government do not balance my household budget. I'd have to eat at Dorthy Day to make ends meet.
