A man working on construction of a new St. Paul police substation complained of not feeling well this afternoon, collapsed and died.

Paramedics and police were called to the site of the old Chevy's Fresh Mex restaurant at 389 N. Hamline Ave., which was demolished in April to make way for the police's new Western District office, about 2:45 p.m.

The man, whose name and age weren't immediately available, was taken to Regions Hospital and pronounced dead, said Tom Walsh, a police spokesman.

The man had been working on scaffolding when he said he didn't feel well and needed to get down, and then collapsed, Walsh said.

Whether the man had a pre-existing medical condition or the heat contributed to his death wasn't known. The temperature in St. Paul at 3 p.m. was 87 degrees, according to the National Weather Service's Chanhassen office.

Sounds like the city's covering up something here. Maybe Bob should investigate.

Did the city force out the Chevy's restaurant so they could build a cop shop? Could be a RICO suit since it obvious the city benefitted by the restaurants closing.

You got anything in brown paper bag waiting to come out on this one? Or are you still waiting for the RICO suites to settle?

11:22,

I reserve the rights for the last laugh. :-)

The only thing I don't like about this new precinct is the cost..

$10 million dollars to build this thing. The floors must be marble and the walls granite. There must be gold plated faucets and automatic wipe toilets.

How bout instead of building them a castle for 10 million we build them a mansion for 1 million and use the rest of the money to hire more police officers and perhaps throw a bone to the poor elderly who could use some help fixing their homes before the property tax's and code enforcement destroy there lives.

It's too bad about the man's death. The Western District needs the new location.

And RICO defender, please don't try to confuse the issue any more with this wordy nonsense.

Pay a little more - get a little better building that has many benefits.

From the mayor's press release...

It will be constructed using Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles. LEED promotes an innovative approach to sustainability based on factors such as water and energy savings, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

“I hope this new building will be a model for energy efficiency in Saint Paul. Using LEED energy and environmental design principles will help us build an energy-efficient facility that ultimately saves money for taxpayers,” Coleman said.

Some of features of the building are that it:

Exceeds the current Minnesota State Building Code by at least 40% and therefore reduces the long-term operating costs of the building.

Takes advantage of the east and south exposure for daylight and passive solar gain;

Utilizes innovative Storm Water Management system that includes a combination of rain gardens, holding ponds and permeable pavement to manage storm water run-off on site;

Utilizes locally-produced precast concrete wall and floor panels, providing long life and low maintenance;

Uses low-e insulated glass windows.

Sounds like a sales pitch to white wash the public to me. Who's building this Flanagan, Figures!

Exceeding the building code by 40% sounds like their exceeding the real cost to buid it by may millions to me.

Maybe that is why we have the "revenue problem" that Kathy Lantry speaks of when she is telling us we don't have a spending problem. talk about an ingenious way to "minimize" a problem!

How's the complaints coming in your office Kathy? Still getting quite a few?
