According to the Ramsey County Property Tax Records, Melvin Carter III and Alecia Carter own a home at 54 Hatch Avenue, in Ward 5. Should Melvin instead be running against Dave Thune?
Not only do the Carter's own the home, it is classified as a Residential Homestead property. Meaning if they're not living there and if they are renting the property to a tennant, they are not fulfilling their property tax obligation. If they are not renting the property to a tennant, then they are claiming that 54 Hatch Avenue in Saint Paul is their primary residence for at least 6 months + 1 day, out of the year. Which is it, where do you and your familiy reside Mr. Carter?
I have linked a thread to Saint Paul Issues and forums concerning this issue.

Matt,
I can answer your question; I've had several conversations with Melvin
on this topic. Part of the reason Melvin is so passionate about
housing issues is because of his own experience trying to find decent,
affordable housing for his family. Melvin and Alecia lived in the
Summit-University neighborhood in the ward after college, and wanted
to stay in the neighborhood but had a hard time finding housing in the
ward that they could both afford and wanted to live in. Melvin ended
up moving to a home near Rice and Front where they lived for two and a
half years-- hardly a "long" time. They've had that house on the
market for some time, and it is scheduled to close this month. While
Rice and Front is technically outside Ward One boundaries by maybe six
or eight blocks, it was certainly not a move "out of the community."
Melvin and Alecia purchased a home on Charles Avenue, in the heart of
the ward, and will close on it this month.
If your intent is to ensure that the person who represents Ward One on
the city council is deeply committed to the ward and personally
invested in its communities, I appreciate your concern for my ward,
and can personally attest to Melvin's community involvement and
commitment.
Melvin grew up here—he was born and raised in Frogtown and
Summit-University, and has ties in the community through about five
generations. I went to school with him at JJ Hill, Capital Hill, and
Central HS, all ward schools. Melvin directs a choir for a church in
the ward (their choir has been going to sing in community nursing
homes for over a year now), has worked as a community organizer for
Got Voice Got Power (an organization that exists for the sole purpose
of building the political voice and power of Ward One residents), and
currently mentors and tutors neighborhood children after school at the
Family Resource Center on Selby and Milton. Melvin's ties in the
ward, and his commitment to his community here run very deep-- how
many of us can say we're as active in our communities?

Well folks, it does matter. Thanks for swinging the door open Mr. Fratto.

Whatever un-named candidate Mr. Fratto is talking about, I don't care. It is
not relevant to the Ward 1 Race for Saint Paul City Council in 2007.
I am not accusing the Carter's of any impropriety, I just want someone to
either address or dispell the rumor, which appears to have a basis in fact.
Ward 1 and Ward 5 residents deserve to know who is or is not living in their
neighborhood. Perhaps the Ward 5 DFL endorsing convention has another
candidate to consider?!?
If you've watched Mr. Carter's Youtube video, you would wonder if he ever
left Ward 1, if you look at his Property Tax Records, you would know that he has, a long time ago. Matt Anfang

Who's living n ward 1 and 5? That's pretty simple...criminals and thugs.
What a joke this Carter guy is. Moves out of his house in Ward 5 and moves in with Mommy, Ward 1. Just up until a few weeks ago he was working for Chirs Coleman.
Melvin the Third needs to get a real job instead of pretending to be something he is not.
Carter should move back to 54 Hatch and run in ward 5 instead of ward 1. The real issue here is Melvin the Thurd does not want to run against Helgen.
What a joke the Carter's are making out of this important race. Momma who sits on the Ramsey County Board must be real proud of her married child moving in with her just to run for the city council.
I like that, Melvin the Turd.
Carter went to the "ACORN" group to try and get them to endorse him and someone who was at the meeting told me that Carter thought the current policy of tearing down everyone's house over minor code vioaltions was just fine.
Guess why he won't run against Helgen? Because they are part of the same Progressive circle that see people like CM Debbie Montgomery as outsiders though, she does a good job of representing the poor over there. Oh yeah, 'progressives' don't care about poor folks unless they can make money off of them. If not, send them out of the city.

I could have not said it more clearly.
How true.
