Black robbers...Joke.
And it's a true story...

On a recent weekend in Atlantic City, a woman won a bucketful of quarters at a slot machine.

She took a break from the slots for dinner with her husband in the hotel l dining room.

But first she wanted to stash the quarters in her room.

"I'll be right back and we'll go to eat," she told her husband and carried the coin-laden bucket to the elevator.

As she was about to walk into the elevator she noticed two men already aboard.

Both were black. One of them was tall...very tall...an intimidating figure.

The woman froze. Her first thought was: These two are going to rob me.

Her next thought was: Don't be a bigot, they look like perfectly nice gentlemen,

but racial stereotypes are powerful, and fear immobilized her.

She stood and stared at the two men.
She felt anxious, flustered and ashamed.

She hoped they didn't read her mind but, gosh, they had to know what she was thinking!!!

Her hesitation about joining them in the elevator was all too obvious now.
Her face was flushed.

She couldn't just stand there, so with a mighty effort of will she picked up one foot and stepped forward and followed with the other foot and was on the elevator.
Avoiding eye contact, she turned around stiffly and faced the elevator doors as they closed.

A second passed, and the another second, and then another.
Her fear increased! The elevator didn't move.

Panic consumed her.

God, she thought, I'm trapped and about to be robbed!

Her heart plummeted. Perspiration poured from every pore.

Then one of the men said, "Hit the floor." Instinct told her to do what they told her.

The bucket of quarters flew upwards as she threw out her arms and collapsed on the elevator floor.

A shower of coins rained down on her.

Take my money and spare me, she prayed. More seconds passed.

She heard one of the men say politely,

"Ma'am, if you'll just tell us what floor you're going to, we'll push the button."

The one who said it had a little trouble getting the words out.

He was trying mightily to hold in a belly laugh.

The woman lifted her head and looked up at the two men.

They reached down to help her up. Confused, she struggled to her feet.

"When I told my friend here to hit the floor," said the average sized one,

"I meant that he should hit the elevator button for our floor.

I didn't mean for you to hit the floor, ma'am." He spoke genially. He bit his lip.

It was obvious he was having a hard time not laughing.

The woman thought: My God, what a spectacle I've made of myself. She was too humiliated to speak.

She wanted to blurt out an apology, but words failed her.

How do you apologize to two perfectly respectable gentlemen for behaving

as though they were going to rob you? She didn't know what to say.

The three of them gathered up the strewn quarters and refilled her bucket.

When the elevator arrived at her floor they then insisted on walking her to her room.

She seemed a little unsteady on her feet, and they were afraid she might not make it down the corridor.

At her door they bid her a good evening.

As she slipped into her room she could hear them roaring with laughter as they walked back to the elevator.

The woman brushed herself off.

She pulled herself together and went downstairs for dinner with her husband
The next morning flowers were delivered to her room - a dozen roses.

Attached to EACH rose was a crisp one hundred dollar bill.

The card said:
"Thanks for the best laugh we've had in years."

It was signed;

Eddie Murphy

Only white people could think that this was OK and funny.

Blacks who are successful and rich find it just as offesive as those who are poor when they are treated like criminals. The woman was just like the city of saint paul in how she treated them and unlike blacks in st paul, they aren't rewardign the city with roses and such for their racism.

Now for the kicker, this urban legend goes back to the 70's. Eddie Murphy has even denied it ever happening and people still swear its true. It was always a friend of someone's mother ot a cousin who was there, yet in the story there is no one else on the elevator. The names of the stars change but the story is the same for over 30 years. By the way, Eddie Murphy is like 5'8" or 5'9"- not tall.
Snopes has a whole write up on it here if you want to know the truth:
http://www.snopes.com/racial/mistaken/hitfloor.asp

I still don't understand why you think racism is funny. I guess next time your son is stopped for WWB, you two will just get a laugh out of it and send the cops some roses.

"HA HA, they thought you were the Payne Avenue rapist!"
"Yeah Dad, those cops are too funny!"
"Yeah son, they are a riot. A fucking riot."

It's funny because we all know that the joke is on us. You start taking everything too serious and attacking everything you read and defending other views as the light of the world. It was a "story". What the city is doing is real, let's not get confused here. Can you tell me the difference between an urban legend and a fairy tale or star magaizine? errrrrrhn!! times up. Beside being really fluffy with air and headiness, they are fun and let's us laugh at ourselves.

What's the difference between the SPPP and the Watchdog? errrrrhn!!! times up. One prints the news that everyone will believe and allows them to remain unquestionable and unbiased. The other will print what is unpopular and down right scarey that people don't want to believe.

If I was in that situation, I can't help it, I would be thinking the same thing. It's only human nature and you can't control that. You can't control that there are two rapers out there, hey it's what the SPPP says, so it must be true. So if I was stupid enough to be out alone at night and a black man approaches me, yeah you're right, I would be thinking these things too.

Then you should run for city council.

Bob wrote that it was a true story and that's been debunked. The issue is why this is humourous to some. In real life, its the same kind of thinking that projects the racism in society. You think its a joke.

Bob copied and pasted a story. Just because it says "bob said" doesn't mean he took it verbatim and typed "it's a true story". No thanks for the job offer then I wouldn't be able to be truthful and call things as I see them. Then I would be owned and would have to answer to people such as yourself who will find fault with everything. What a joke, as if you really care about equal rights and justice for all. You can't even give me the right to laugh at the irony of that which you have just proven or my right to admit that I have a stero-typing issue, we all do. Can you honestly say that you don't?

Jeesh, pick on the little stuff because there is nothing else to oppose here.

I don't care if the story is tru or not.

The story is true in the sense that many white people do stereo type blacks like this.

Maybe the joke wasn't about how this woman is or was predjudice, but how how she managed to make such an overwehlming fool of herself in doing so. There are many deifferent variations of humor in many diferent people. What I find disrutbing is that since everyone else does not see this the way that 9:56 does, he stereotypes everyne else as being racist! Too bad this poster is not as concerned about the racist city officials.

What I have a problem with on 9:56 is that it seems to run to check out every little urban legend story. What about things, real life things, that are happening right under our noses. 9:56 also gives Bob full credit as if he wrote the story. Isn't that a little bit like blaming innocent persons for behavior issues and illegal conduct by perfectly able-body adults.

Ok... You all can have at me. I sent that to Bob, I sent it to him as an example of how people tend to stereo type. It is a proven fact that most all people do it. I am guilty myself even though I do try to give a chance before I judge them, that is not always possible for me. Also according to the story or joke however you would like to look at it, who was the one saying it was the best laugh he had had in years... the black men... So if you all want to rip on someone for the story here I am... enjoy yourself.

Nancy, I agree with everything you said except that its funny because the black men said so.

We know that this is not a real incident and never happened so the black men do not exist to express it being funny or not.

In real life, it's offensive to constantly be looked at as a criminal. I heard MN Supreme COurt Justice Alan Paige say that he's experienced it as judge on the highest court in the state and it hurts just as much as when he was a teenager and nobody knew him. There is nothing funny about it.

It sugarcoats the effect or racism and prejudice by informing us that the black men found it funny and sent roses and money to this womans' room (by the way another that its bull is how would they have known who she was or where she stayed?).

What if that was in MN and the woman had a gun (with a c and c permit of course)and they said hit the floor?

Again, if it was Bob's kid and his friends just riding an elevator doing nothing and this happened, BOb would be beside himself in anger. Not sending the woman a thank you for the laugh note.

Its silly and offensive.

8:44 I stated according to the story the black men said it was "the best laugh they had had in a years", I do not know for a fact that it is a true story,I wasn't there and that is the only way I would be able to say its a true story, as for how did the men know where she was staying and who she was...in the story it states they walked her to her room, that would be all the info two famous people would need..

8:44, Let me help you out here. I think I know what you are getting at, or at the very least come across as:

Nancy you are responsible for this story, totally responsible for what the original author created. What do you mean coming here and thinking you can do anything with your freedoms.

Bob, you should be condemning this story, rip this story from this site it's causing blight!

You will not get away with exercising your freedom Nancy, Nancy are you listening to me. I am saying what's right, the only thing that is right. You are not right and I don't even want to hear about what you think. Don't post anything like that again, because afterall I am right and you are not. So Nancy, think twice about voicing any of your opinions. Some of us like you to be apathetic towards everything, then there will not ever, ever be challenges to the system. I think I'm being politically correct, but I do care about your rights, really. I'm just really wishy-washy.

Afterall, we all know that this site caters to property rights people and government self-interests. But we must all get along and agree and never be controversial to anyone! That way the world will be filled with peace and love. So what if we have no rights and they are being taken away right and (by the) left. It is for our own good and we should not make snap decisions. We should just sit and wait and see if it will all work out. But at least I feel good about taking a stand against this story because the world and humanity depends on these sort of things, ya know.

Listen dumbass (not you Nancy, just below your last post).

Everyone can have their opinon of course but, to state it as fact (like saying this is a true story) will get it scrutinized differently. Freedom of speech does not insulate you from more speech that you may not like or want to hear. Your post actually makes my case. You can post what you want, but we have the right to say what we want about it, and challenge any statement put forth as fact. I did research, found out that this is myth. Go to the link and you will see for yourself as well as read the statement by Eddie Murphy 17 years ago on this false and stupid statement. The validity of the story is 100% false. No argument there.

Second, I find it strange that anyone who has been discriminated against would find it funny. It's not. It's a serious lingering problem we have in this country. Even to use this story as a way to emphasize prejudice is bad is off. You shouldn't pre-judge people because you don't know if they are famous or rich or generous (well maybe that's one reason). You shouldn't prejudge because its wrong, and its hurtful to the person your doing it against.

What people don't discuss is that its hurtful the targets, not funny to them. Bob, you know this to be true from real life. Cops or people rolling up to your son and his friends assuming because of the way they are dressed that they are thugs or drug dealers is not funny.

Its the worst thing about America.

9:38 AM

People will always pre-judge. How you command anyone not to be is beyond human ability. There is a fight or flight stance in us and there is also intuition. There's also the truth that you want to only hear about in newspapers, TV and blogs like this. Well, the true story that you're after is full of violence, murders, beatings and shootings with innocent lives caught in the middle. To break it to you gently so as to not upset or aggravate you, may be impossible, but here goes, young black youth do most of the above crime on the streets. Now if you want to go into the board rooms, then it would be the greedy top of the heep CEO's. Want to go into government? Crooked code inspectors, police chiefs and all the nepotism that surrounds their hires and promotions. So rosey painter, let's see the world and people for what it is and they are. Quit trying to be so insulted by human nature, man is inherently sinful not heartful. Give it up, grow up and get over it. Racism is not going away. It's been here since the beginning and will always be here on this world as we know it.

Hey here's a real life story for ya. Feel better now. Maybe those young white ladies should have appealed to the gang of black youths not to pick on them and just leave them alone. The parents of these rebelers said that they were innocent by the way. Does that make you feel any better.

""""Black-on-white attackers
get probation, house arrest
Mob severely beat 3 women on Halloween
– judge picks 'least restrictive disposition'"""""

It may be most, but that is not what scares others, especially white, especially a white woman, when faced with being alone and/or vulnerable and being approached by a group of black males. I'm talking being scared and "knowing" all the stories that have happened and mostly all in the last 50 years. So 9:30, he who calls "dumbass" may ironically be that himself. You want it all to go away? Then stop the world and get off. Wouldn't we all like to do that or have Scotty beam us up.

Lovely group you got here Bob. Explains a lot and maybe you do belong here than where ever you were writing before.

Suddenly you got no opinion. Next time you write about the cops picking on your sons for wearing baggy clothes and listening to rap music, don't say shit. Keep the same silence you are holding onto now in the face of this ignorance.

Birds of a feather...

What bird are you? Hey man you can be the turkey. Yah, you'll be our token liberated turkey. Turkey's are very loud and don't make any sense unlike song birds, but hey you can squawk all you want here.

Hi All,

I have an OPINION as usual.I have a good excuse for not coming around sooner. So I'll speak off topic for a moment and tell ya all whats up.

I have been working hard on publishing the "A-Democracy Town Hall News Letter".I am not a real smart guy so it takes me a little longer to get it right. :-)

The Lil Paper will bring others to our Town Hall meeting here and slowly but surely land on every door step in Saint Paul.

In time the Lil Paper will grow from a News Letter into a NEWS PAPER that is active with the community in real time through the A-Democracy Town Hall Meeting Blog (On-line forum in the near future)

It is my hope the Classified ads section will fund the expansion of what we "All" have accomplished here. I say ALL, because as you "All" know it is you who participate here that has made this site popular.

Stereo Types- So here it is you called me out!

There has been talk here that young anti social black males have earned a jacket so to speak for black people in general.

I say only because we have a media that focuses on these types of crimes. And we have a generation that can't even look in the mirror and see their own racism when it is looking them in the face. I see more white guys robbing banks than blacks. More white guys are being arrested for manufacturing meth and dealing the drug than blacks. Heinous crimes surround the meth drug culture.

Fact- the most heinous violent crimes have been committed by white men. These young black youth kill each other and run for the most part. Black on Black crimes.

The white people I have investigated for violent crimes have maimed and tortured for days before they killed their victims.

Most serial killers have been white men. We have unsolved serial homicides here in Minnesota that are believed to have been committed by white men.

White men have cannibalized their victims here in America. We don't hear about these types of heinous crimes among black people.

So I ask everyone, look in the mirror what do you see?
