The City Council claims to be concerned about vacant buildings.

This will create more vacant buildings. It will multiply the crisis of affordable housing.

But then that is the intention right! "Destroy the nest get rid of the critter". Chase low income people out of the City by denying them access to affordable private rental housing.

Coleman, City Council, I want to be standing at your office doors as your packing your careers in politics.

Council Minutes

JANUARY 28, 2004

21. Resolution - 04-80 - Ordering the owner to remove or repair the building(s) at 1069 Greenbrier Street within fifteen (15) days from adoption of resolution. (Legislative Hearing Officer recommends approval)

Marcia Moermond, Legislative Hearing Officer, reported that this address is a chronic problem property. The owner of the property was not present at the Legislative Hearing although several neighbors were present along with two prospective developers. Testimony was received from the neighbors about the problems with this property and there was discussion with the prospective developers regarding what would be required from the city were they to pursue redevelopment of the property. There is a prospective developer who has a purchase agreement, posted bond, and had the code compliance inspection conducted.

Based on the Legislative Hearing, Ms. Moermond recommended to the Council that they go forward with the order to remove or repair.

Wally Nelson, Renovation, Inc. appeared and provided background information on his company and the numerous properties they have rehabilitated. He stated that houses do not cause problems but rather people do. He asked for 180 days to rehab this property saying it is fixable.

Appearing in support of the Hearing Officer’s recommendation were:

Nancy Finch, 1067 Greenbrier - she said she has paid a high price for the negligence of this neighboring property.

John Lesch, State Representative for this area - he said he is concerned about affordable housing and homelessness across the board but he has learned that there are certain houses that are far beyond being able to be remedied and there are also houses that have been such a scourge on the neighborhood that it’s an insult on the neighbors to allow one more person to come in and say they are going to save it. This house is on a very small lot with no room for a driveway. Mr. Lesch feels it will end up as another rental property in a zip code that already has twice the number of Section 8 certificates of any other zip code in St. Paul.

Leslie McMurry, District 5 Planning Council - she said decisions such as this require weighing a variety of values. The District 5 Planning Council supports the creation of affordable quality housing in its district and the city but retaining substandard housing is a disservice to the neighborhood. The District Council has heard numerous neighbor comments about problems with this specific property.

Councilmember Helgen moved to close the public hearing. Yeas - 6 Nays - 0

After discussion by the Council, Councilmember Helgen moved approval of the resolution.

Adopted Yeas - 6 Nays - 0

Bob- I see Steve Magners favorite Developer claims buildings aren't the problem people are.. Hmmmm!

I did just that I got another home but not in the city of St.Paul., I checked but most all of the homes in St.Paul were condemned and waiting for a code compliance so I decided to pass and move to a real city where the citizens are treated with respect. No I am not a sore loser, I am doing just great. That doesn't mean the city and their tactics are proper or that I have to approve what is happening to many other citizens of St.Paul especially the elderly ones that have devoted their whole life to that town to get the shaft in the end.

Sorry but I do have feelings for other human beings...

I got information on Renovations Inc. and Steve Magner that will blow your mind. Does anyone know where I should send the information? I have a feeling that St.Paul might just slide it under the rug.

These guys are like mobsters. Isn't that what the Rico laws were made for?
