Councilman Bostrom boasts about the "responsible renters" having a decent place to live and his choice of words makes me wonder if he thinks the renters that he thinks are irresponsible are entitled to the same.

So pretty much in the nut shell the city wants low income minorities out of private rentals into government funded multi units so they can free up neighborhoods for the middle class. Then you special neighborhood groups and city council can all look the same.

This is government segregation. Can't you all see?

The city just doesn't want private landlords in the business. I have a friend that lives in San Francisco, and if you are looking for an apartment to rent out in that community, there's very few places being rented by private landlords. They are all government and non profits. This is where the city of St. Paul is headed.

COUNCIL WOMAN LANTRY- Do you let someone live in unsafe, substandard housing because you don't want to make them homeless? Or do you want to make them dead?" she said. "That's why we have inspections, to make sure the public safety is not at risk."

Bob- With all do respect Council woman Lantry. Ask any homeless person if they would rather freeze to death outside, lose fingers toes and other pieces of flesh from frost bite, or possibly have a remote chance of burning to death in your mythical unsafe building.

You are extremely callous. So are the rest of you morons on the Council.

If I recall there hasn't been any deaths in rental property due to unsafe living conditions.. That last fire where deaths occured was due to a child playing with a lighter, correct me if I am wrong but in my opinion that would be more of a parenting safety issue, and the over crowding is also not something a landlord can always keep tabs on...its not like the tenant is going to inform the landlord everytime they have visitors come stay with them for a few days..

Does anyone have an answer to exactly what lives have been lost or injuries due to property neglect compared to lives and injuries due to homelessness? Also the rate of crime I would think is bound to be much higher amongst homeless than a person living with a torn screen or chipping exterior paint..

The more I read the happier I am that I no longer live within the city of St.Paul..I don't think you could give me a home for free in St.Paul and get me to return.

So much resistance to keeping your damn property livable. Being poor doesn't mean you have to live in squalor. Clean your damn rat traps up and you'll have no problem.

Is it so hard to do the right thing? You think people who live on your block with that eyesore like seeing their own property value go down thanks to your neglect?

Being poor shouldn't have to mean your homeless either.. Many of these properties had very minor issues that needed repair, I don't care what home you live in a inspector could find violations if they look hard enough and are ordered to do so... This issue is not about not wanting to make repairs it is about fairness and repairs within reason along with holding a landlord responsible for the criminal acts of their tenants. What about the criminal acts the city officials have been committing, is their behavior justified because of their title?

Absolutely right. Time to end private ownership if the private owners can't do the job right!

And Nancy - Minor repairs are still repairs that need to be done. Something shouldn't be allowed to draggggggg on forever!

Hey Chuckster - Does this apply to you? Do you have problem properties that have "minor" fixes that never get done? Well if it does, let hope your buddies don't protect you because it is far to easy to find out that kind of thing.
