Yes, many of the immigrants who streamed through Ellis Island into the United States around the turn of the century worked hard, obeyed the laws, did their best to learn English (and otherwise become assimiliated into American culture), raised children who willingly took up arms to defend their adoptive country in times of crisis, and made their way in the world (and perhaps even prospered) with little or no help from the government or anyone outside their immediate families and circles of acquaintances. However, plenty of immigrants in that same era did not fit that mold, such as those who:
•Resorted to scams, petty theft, and all sorts of other crimes to get by, or simply resumed the same kinds of criminal activities they'd been perpetrating in their homelands, sometimes on large, organized scales (e.g., the Italian mafia, Chinese triads).
•Moved to enclaves or communities in which their original cultures and languages were preserved, obviating the need for them to ever assimiliate into the broader American culture or learn English. (If the immigrants of earlier eras "stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl," then who started all the ethnic enclaves, such as Little Germany and Chinatown, found in New York and New Ulm, Scandia, Finlandia, Germantown, Little Italy, Swedes Hollow, Dutchtown and other towns in the Midwest?) Their children (and future generations) were often left to learn English and assimilate as best they could on their own, driven by necessity rather than allegiance to American national ideals.
•Retained their original family names, or changed their names only reluctantly — the latter not to "blend in with their new home," but to try to escape the prejudices, persecution, and violence typically visited upon members of various national, ethnic, and religious groups in the U.S. (e.g., Catholics, Jews, Irish, Italians).
•Declined to participate in fighting for the U.S. against their home countries in World War I (as did their children in World War II), or even left the U.S. to return home and fight for the other side. (And certainly many first-generation Americans of Japanese descent, who found themselves restricted to internment camps merely due to their ancestry, gave plenty of "thought about what country their parents had come from.")
•Disdained free lunches, welfare, and labor laws not because they were virtuous and prized self-sufficiency, but because those government programs did not yet exist. Though the land gove away programs were there for European immigrants (hence the name of the small towns listed above). It was the greatest welfare benefit of all. HOMESTEADING (show up and receive free land- unless you're an Indian, Black, Chinese or Mexican). Also, places like the Iron Range would send company representatives to places like Croatia, Italy, Finland, Slovakia and Serbia to bring families over to work in the mines. This was great, if you weren't black, Indian, Mexican or Chinese. Of course, this was done on two-parts. Europeans would blend in better (white) and immigrants were willing to undercut the bottom hourly rate and work week. Thus taking the economy into a dive and creating the Robber Barons of yesteryear.
Anybody on here spend anytime in school listening? I mean aside from the "Dr" Fugitive?
6:52: What you are offering as a view, is man's sinful human nature, mixed with corruptable government. This has been going on since the beginning of time and will continue until..... well let's just say that the world is filled with evil and good. The original posting was meant to reflect what is happening today in today's immigrants and illegals, you know today, now?
Maybe forming your own perspective and view points, while in school, would be a wonderful and glorious thing for school kids today and yester year, as they wouldn't have that damned political correctness and world view that is indwelt in them by the time they are living in the adult world.
I'm sure Randy Kelly and fam has brought with them some of that Irish mafia behvavior and then elected his army to carry out his crimes.
What other country could you immigrate to or even just visit and demand that they bend to fit your heritage, language, culture? The UK is having their hands full of it, as we are too.
Do you think that you could go to Saudi Arabia and tell them that your family will be living just as they do here is the US? Go ahead and try, and they say that they are our allies. What about the countries that hate US? Immigrate there and see how far you get with your freedom and choice of clothing and religion!
America was a once in a lifetime country that was formed for freedom and civil rights for all. It's the youngest country, without being re-named. It's survived and thrived many years even with all the events that you described.
Israel, now there's a miracle, being desolate for thousand's of years and then being a nation again. There again you have others moving in and demanding a piece of which they do not own. Currently speaking of course.
Boy it's cold outside and the crops in CA are failing because it's soooooo cold, where is this "global warming"?
"I have 2 Daddys". If that could be done, it must be some sort of "miracle".
So let's pray for both our soldiers and our school children!
So I see the opposition to the conservatives posting here whining about keeping up with the current events, so while were at it, let's pray for the liberal people and heads of state as they take our country by the reins and hope they don't plunder it even more into desolation.
Peace be with you brothers and sisters.
Israel has not been desolate for a thousand years. There has been a struggle between jews, Christians and Muslims for the Holy Land for over a thousand years. Each has ruled Israel at one time or another. The 'others' as you call them were living there for over a thousand years when the Brits with the consent of the world drew up the boundaries for todays Israel. Why? After World War II, they wanted the Jews to have somewhere to go that wasn't their country.
I can name 30 countries that you can go to that will respect and let you practice your own culture. You named one yourself.
Saudi Arabia is not just against Westerners, but Shiite Muslims as well (they one we put in charge in Iraq). SO you can be an Arab and still be discriminated against because you are a different sect of the same religion.
Immigrants have always come here with a present from the government. In the old days when you could grow your own food and didn't need an education they were giving the right to Homestead land and or given a job- the two biggest government givaways in our history. Healthcare and food for women and children (WIC) is just a continuation of us taking care of immigrants. They have always grouped into neighborhoods and even homesteaded whole towns where they could speak their own language and not english.
It has taken 26 additions to our constitution for America to be the land of civil rights and freedom. It didn't start off that way at all.
Gobal warming is a fact. Seasonal and climatic changes are the proof. You, who seems to not understand a whole lot, put forth proof of that by mentioning the weather in CA.
These are all facts, not the perspective of some kid. The fact that you don't know this should force you to question all that yuo think you know.
10:06: You are right about nation against nation, however, Saudi Arabia was sarcasm. You could not go there today and live as here. We don't have any more than 2 countries that are our allies (Israel and UK).
Israel was a deslolate rock that grew nothing but weeds, until the Jew returned to their homeland and amazingly the earth put forth a plethera of fruit, flowers and other blessings that they have been exporting for some time now.
Where do you get your info from? I like to ask that question, too bad more school kids don't question this.
I have a lasso for the moon, if I ever get control over it, should I bring it to you? Maybe a weather machine will be invented and we will control the world. Maybe we will be under an ice age watch next decade, we'll see.
Praise be the government for giving to the people. Their lesson will include: the government is good never speak out against it, it feeds you so never bite the hand that feeds you for it will soon own you.
Your "goodness" that you speak of will not save you! Am I your enemy?
Wow, that person's book must have gotten a real going over. Turn the page.
To the pro-schooler who likes to repeat, hopes to defeat but never depletes the carnal knowledge secrety desired by the books that bind the mind of he. He in turn longs to find all answers that burn to he; when he finds them he will twist and turn the black on white, even though they lack, but alas any way to fit the fancy free.
What the hell kind of english are you using? Half Klingon?
Let me put it in a way you can understand it:
He who speaks ill of education, while writing badly, become his own best adversary. Thou ist you.
