Peter Hong — a longtime Republican operator in Minnesota politics — will serve five days in jail after a jury convicted him of soliciting an undercover St. Paul officer for sex.
Hong, 42, of Minneapolis, was sentenced today to 60 days in jail, which will be stayed for a year while he is on probation.
Ramsey County District Judge Margaret Marrinan also ordered that Hong pay a $500 fine plus fees, and attend "john school" through the Breaking Free program, which helps sexually exploited and battered women.
In July, a jury convicted Hong of a misdemeanor for engaging in prostitution.
He was one of 19 people picked up July 23, 2007, during a two-day prostitution sting. Undercover officers from the St. Paul police vice squad posted ads for sex online at Craigslist and in newspapers. Hong met an officer at a hotel on Payne Avenue.
Hong testified that he thought he was paying for a massage from the woman.
The charge against Hong was downgraded from gross misdemeanor to misdemeanor. Prosecutors said the more severe charge required proof that he solicited a prostitute in a public place. The evidence against Hong fell short of that, prosecutors said.
Hong, a Carleton College graduate, was a campaign spokesman for Gov. Tim Pawlenty in 2002 and congressional press secretary to former Sen. Rod Grams for much of the 1990s. He also served as the Bush-Cheney Minnesota presidential campaign spokesman in 2004. His most recent political stint was as
Minnesota's presidential campaign spokesman for former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.
Hong testified at trial that he was unemployed but occasionally works as a consultant.
