Another candidate has jumped into this year's City Council races in St. Paul, this time vying for the Ward 3 seat that represents Highland Park and part of Macalester-Groveland.

Gerald Mischke, a graphic artist for the Minneapolis-based Star Tribune newspaper, is brother of Highland Villager Publisher Michael Mischke and KSTP radio personality T.D. "Tommy" Mischke. He announced Tuesday that he plans to take on Pat Harris, the Democratic-Farmer-Labor incumbent.

Mischke said he plans to run as an independent, a route that has proved successful in the past for both Harris and his brother Mike Harris, who previously held the seat.

"Hopefully, through the course of a campaign ... I can convince people that a little change would be good," Mischke said.

He also cited concerns over the planned development of the light-rail corridor on University Avenue, saying he thought plans to put a tunnel under the intersection of University and Snelling avenues would be "awful for the area. It would turn that intersection into something like Lake and Hiawatha," Mischke said.

He also said he was concerned about the future of the Ford plant site, which is likely to touch off one of the most massive redevelopment efforts in the city.

Mischke said he was particularly inspired by recent efforts he led to unionize workers at the Star Tribune for the Graphic Communications Conference. "I think, actually, forming the union and representing people is sort of a good experience for representing a group of citizens. I found that I really enjoyed that aspect of my work," Mischke said.

Mischke is a native of Ward 3 and lives near Grand Avenue and Albert Street. He is 43, unmarried and has no children.

Pat Harris welcomed Mischke to the race. "I look forward to a spirited discussion of the issues," Harris said Tuesday.

All seven seats on the St. Paul City Council are up for election this fall, led by races on the East Side for Ward 6, in the North End for Ward 5 and in the Summit-University and Frogtown neighborhoods for Ward 1. Two other wards, represented by Dave Thune and Kathy Lantry, do not yet have active races.

In Ward 4, Council Member Jay Benanav has decided not to run, leaving the race - for now - to community organizer Russ Stark, who has won the DFL endorsement.

This is the best news I have heard today!

Mischke has the brains and ability to move Ward 3 forward.

It was Pat Harris who stated he did not have to listen to the new Highland District Council. Now Pat is an official DFLer and he feels he does not have to listen to anyone.

The time is right to replace the Harris family from ward 3. New blood is needed.

The Highland District Council lead by Gail Summers is a good friend of both Mike and Pat Harris. What she has done to good people of Highland Park (one lost their home) using the code compliance office is a shame.

Hey Gail, a good DFLer, why didn't you pay your taxes. Is this a do as I say, but don't do as I say situation? $33,000.00 in unpaid taxes what a shame.

Gerald the best of luck to you. I will be helping you as Pat must go.

The rumor is Pat wants to be mayor one day. Well sent him packing.

Give him hell Mischke. You have my support.

Highland Park resident.

Hi All,

This is good news! I bet Gerald would be more than happy to listen to the Highland district council.

Since Pat Harris doesn't think it is important to get input from the Highland Council I don't think it is important for the citizens of Highland to give him any consideration.

Does anyone know if Mr. Mischke has an email address?

I would like to hear more from Gerald. Or is it Jerry?
