Coon Rapids police have arrested a suspect in the attempted abduction of a 12-year-old girl.
Police say the 46-year-old Coon Rapids man was arrested late Friday at his home after the girl provided descriptions of the man and his truck. The suspect is being held in the Anoka County jail. Police say he is not a registered sex offender.
According to police, the girl was walking to a school bus stop Friday morning when was pulled into a truck or sport-utility vehicle by a man, who then drove away.
The man released the middle school student after driving a few blocks, but not before a struggle ensued and the girl suffered a bloody nose, Chief Deputy Tim Snell said.
Three students at Northdale Middle School witnessed the abduction and told school officials when they arrived there, said principal Laurie Jacklitch.
Snell said several witnesses in the area of 132nd Avenue NW. and Martin Lane, where the incident happened around 8 a.m., told police that they had seen a man in the neighborhood driving a dark red or maroon pickup truck or SUV with a girl "who appeared to be in distress."
According to police, the girl was walking alone to a bus stop when the suspect drove up and pulled her into his vehicle. They drove about a half mile before he let the girl go at the corner of 133rd Avenue NW and Thrush Street, along the Andover border. She had a bloody nose and ran to a nearby house to ask for help. A family there drove her home.
They came to the police station late Friday afternoon, where they were interviewed.
