St. Paul / 'We were almost ready to leave'
Family was moving out of house when girl, teen were shot

Taleida Parker had feared for her family's safety.
When her house was shot at last month, in what she believes was escalating tension between her son and kids in their Summit-University neighborhood in St. Paul, it was the last straw.
Parker's family was in the process of moving out of 650 Central Ave. when 5-year-old Yameha "Mimi" Burnett, to whom she is legal guardian, and 16-year-old family friend Lamario Bell were both shot in the leg Friday night while hanging out in the front yard.
"We were almost ready to leave," Parker said. "We just finished our last moving load and only had to clean up and mop."
Mimi was eating a Popsicle when she was shot in the back of her left leg. Both Mimi and Bell have been released from the hospital. So far no arrests have been made.
Parker said two of her sons and their father, Daniel Parker, started a game of basketball on the street Friday evening while Mimi and some other children watched from the front steps. About 8:25 p.m., a gunman approached from between two houses across the street and fired shots toward the group.
Parker dismissed speculation that the incident was gang-related and also wondered if the situation could have been avoided.
In March, a group of kids broke the family's railing and threw it at the front door window, breaking it. Her eldest son, who is 18, confronted the group, and Parker believes they've held a grudge ever since.
When the house was shot at last month, Parker suspected it was the same group that broke the window.
Parker said both incidents were reported to police, but no one was arrested. "It took for a 5-year-old getting shot," she said. "Something could have been done a long time ago."
Police officials were asked about Parker's allegations of a poor response to the previous incidents, but they had not replied as of Saturday evening.
In the meantime, Parker wants to make sure that Mimi, who on Saturday was in Rochester staying with her biological mother, will have a healthy recovery.
"Even though her wound wasn't fatal, we still don't know what it's done to her emotionally," Parker said. "I'm just thankful she won't have to go back to the same house."

Yameha (Mimi) Burnett, a bright 5-year-old cartoon-loving girl with a gift for gab, seems to have enjoyed all the attention family and friends have paid to her since Friday night, said her oldest sister Britney Parker, 19.
Yet that has come at a fearful price for Mimi's loved ones, with most of their doting over her coming at St. Paul's Regions Hospital.
Mimi and a 16-year-old boy, Lamario Bell, a friend of her siblings, were each shot in the leg Friday night after someone opened fire on a group of people, primarily youngsters, who were gathered outside a St. Paul home.
Their wounds were not life-threatening, and both were released from the hospital by Saturday afternoon, Mimi's family members said.
Police said Saturday that no one has been arrested and that they did not have any suspect descriptions to release.
"When I got the call [about the shooting], I was in disbelief," said the Rev. Daryl Spence, a member of the God Squad group of ministers who St. Paul police often call to help out. Spence, who lives only a block away, said the fact that a girl as young as Mimi had been shot was "startling" on its own.
"That's horrible for anywhere," said the Rev. Byron Moore, pastor of the St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church, which is just up the street from the shooting scene along the 600 block of W. Central Avenue.
What led to the crime and whether the shooter was targeting anyone remained unclear Saturday. There apparently was no confrontation or dispute immediately before the 8:30 p.m. shootings.
"That's the most cowardly act," said Daniel Traxler, who has custody of Mimi along with his girlfriend. "Mimi has no argument with anybody," he said, adding that the shots seemed to have been aimed at a group of mostly pre-teen and teenaged girls surrounding Mimi.
On Friday, Traxler and his family, who had been living at the Central Avenue home for the past several months, had finished packing for a move elsewhere in the city.
By about 8:30 p.m., he was hanging out in front of his home with his children and their friends, many of them playing basketball on a portable hoop. Suddenly, they were jolted by loud pops.
At the time, Mimi had been sitting on the front steps of the home, eating a Popsicle. The bullet that hit her ended up going straight through her left leg. Bell, who was also hit in the left leg, had been standing next to the stairs, Parker said.
Traxler said he saw a gunman across the street fire the shots from a spot between two houses. Moore said the neighborhood is close-knit and generally pretty quiet, with disturbances more likely to be loud car music. That atmosphere is helped by the high number of owner-occupied homes in the area, Spence said.
Still, Parker said that her family's house had been shot at and vandalized a few other times recently. She attributed those incidents to a "dispute" that had gotten out of hand.
Several neighbors said the house, home to several generations of the Traxler family for many years, has been the subject of numerous police calls, though the nature of those calls was unclear Saturday.
Anyone with information about the shootings is asked to call police at 651-291-1111.

Looks like the city will be sending Magner and the bulldozers to 650 Central to start threatning the homeowner. Permits closed without the final will be Magners excuse to the city council to justify his actions, even though somebody stuck a lot of money into this home. Now Magner can get his buddies over there to buy the home at a discount after he imposes his threats.
I thought these "Code Compliance" deals were supposed to help make the neighborhood better?
