St. Anthony is so quiet that nobody in Denise Studer's family heard the gunshot next door.

"My cousin called and asked if my 17-year-old was OK," Studer said. "I asked why, and she said look out your window."

Just before midnight Wednesday, a 17-year-old teen was shot and killed at 2702 37th Ave. N.E., part of a rental duplex that has regularly attracted St. Anthony police, investigators said.

By Thursday morning, police had recovered the gun. And a 17-year-old identified by St. Anthony police as a suspect, had turned himself in to investigators. The duplex was blocked with police tape and the property's "For Sale" sign had come down.

The teen who turned himself in is in the Hennepin County Juvenile Center awaiting possible charges, which could be filed as early as this morning, investigators said. The victim and suspected shooter reportedly had known each other but neither lived in the house. Police, who would not release the names of either 17-year-old, said Thursday they were unsure of the circumstances that lead to the shooting.

This is the first fatal shooting in St. Anthony in more than 20 years and the first reported gunshot at all in more than eight months, said St. Anthony police office manager Kim Dulz.

Studer and her husband have three sons, ages 12 to 17, and the shooting left her "really on edge." She plans to rally with a couple of other neighbors in an appeal to have the property rezoned to disallow renters. As it is, she and her husband put up a privacy fence several years ago on the north side of their yard.
"It was never horrible, just a nuisance," she said of people associated with the duplex.

"There's a lot of turnover there and police have been there quite a bit, but oh, my gosh, I'm in shock," she said. "The city has heard us before about other issues and they gotta listen now."

Bill and Duffy Sauer, who have lived for 40 years a few houses down and on the other side of nearby Harding Street, see the shooting as more an unfortunate anomaly than as a harbinger.

"This has been a real nice peaceful neighborhood until now," Bill Sauer said. "Just because it happened here, do you pick up and move? No. But be more vigilant? Definitely."
