One teen, two adults shot dead in St. Paul

St. Paul police are investigating the shooting deaths of two adults and a 15-year-old in the city's North End.

Police responded to a call about 6:42 a.m. at 292 Burgess St., and found that a 31-year-old man, 32-year-old woman and a teenage girl had been shot, police spokesman Tom Walsh said.

The woman was still alive when found but was pronounced dead after being taken to Regions Hospital.

Preliminary indications show the gunshot wounds were not self-inflicted, Walsh said.

Police do not believe the shooting was random, but do not have suspect information yet. More than one person may have been involved, Walsh said.

No weapon has been recovered and authorities are not commenting on where the shooting occurred inside the house.

Police said at least three other people - two children and one adult - were in the house during the shooting.

A woman describing herself as a cousin of one of the victims told WCCO-AM radio she spoke to children who escaped from the home during the shooting. The cousin said the children gave this account:

Gunmen burst into a back door and demanded money. When the male victim said there was no money in the house, he was shot. The woman told the home invaders to take a television or whatever else they wanted. She, too, was shot. Then the gunmen shot the 15-year-old victim. At least two children escaped and ran to a nearby cousin's house.

Police did not immediately confirm those details.

A 17-year-old girl who went to the house this morning found the bodies. She went to another location to call for help.
The shootings caused some in the neighborhood to worry about safety. Walsh said whoever shot the victims pose a threat to "everyone, not just the neighbors."

"We moved here with the idea this was going to be a neighborhood where our kids can feel safe," said Angela Benjamin, who moved to a house around the corner from the homicide in August.

"This makes you question everything. Anytime a child is hurt or anybody gets killed it's traumatic. We really thought we were safe here."

NEWS FLASH

This property is a brand new house which is a rental property and right directly across the street from 297 Burgess which is part of the Federal Lawsuit against the city.

It seems the city had to rid itself of Kelly Brisson and get a "so called" code violations fixed up so the neighborhood would be safer.

It doesn't look like they did such a good job to me.

Teen, 2 adults killed in St. Paul shooting
A man, a woman and the woman's teenaged daughter were shot and killed early this morning in the midst of an attempted robbery of their St. Paul home.

Last update: March 23, 2007 – 11:27 AM

A man, a woman and the woman's teenaged daughter were shot and killed early this morning in the midst of an attempted robbery of their St. Paul home.
"Everyone was shot in the head," a younger daughter of the woman told police after escaping from the house at 292 Burgess St., in the city's North End neighborhood.

Family members and friends identified the victims as Maria McLay, 32; Brittany McLay, 15, and Otahl Webb, 31.

"This is a great family that was lost," said Jenny Rouse, who described herself as Maria McLay's best friend.

McLay's 10-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son, who safely escaped from the house, "are traumatized," Rouse said.

Maria McLay died at Regions Hospital, while her daughter and Webb were dead at the scene.

Another friend, Linda Griffin, said McLay and Webb, who had lived in the house for about two years, were engaged to be married. Brittany McLay was a 10th grader at Como Park High School, school officials said.

Deon Hunter, a friend of Webb's, was walking his daughter to her school bus stop this morning when he noticed crime scene tape and went to the nearby home of a brother of Maria McLay.

As he arrived, he said police were questioning the 10-year-old girl. The girl said men broke in through the back door of the house and demanded that Webb hand over all of his money, Hunter said.

Webb offered the robbers $4, which he said was all he had. When they said it wasn't enough, he offered them his television set. That's when the shots were fired, Hunter said.

"They didn't deserve this," he said. He described Webb as a stay-at-home father who had filled out a job application a few days ago at a Cub Foods supermarket.

The bodies had not been removed from the house at 11 a.m.

"Most likely the people involved knew each other," said St. Paul police spokesman Tom Walsh, saying the shootings were not random. No arrests had been made late this morning.

Walsh described the neighborhood as blue collar and quiet, calling the break-in as "a home invasion."

Police said they do not yet know how many suspects they are looking for and it hadn't been determined how many shots were fired.

Asked if neighbors were in danger, Walsh said, "You have someone intent on killing someone, that poses a threat to anybody."

The homicides happened in the ward of City Councilmember Lee Helgen, who said his heart goes out to the family of the victims. He said the early morning crime is very unusual and like everybody else, "we're just scratching our heads about how this could have happened."

The street where the homicides happened hasn't been problematic to police, he said. The neighborhood isn't known for crime and no previous police calls were made to the house where the homicides took place, he said.

"We've worked hard to clean up some problem houses in the area," he said. "But this is just shocking."

Helgen said he has confidence that police will develop leads and find who is responsible.

The 911 call came at 6:42 a.m. from a 17-year-old girl who was not in the house at the time of shooting, Walsh said. Her relationship to the occupants is not yet known. Police said she went into the house, saw the bodies and called police.

The killings bring the number of St. Paul homicides to seven this year. There were 16 in 2006.

Bob- first of all Lee you are scratching your head because you thought by getting rid of affordable housing you would be decreasing the numbers in crime. WRONG! Also, the neighborhood is crime ridden and has been since the early seventies. It just got worst with the introduction of CRACK and now the very dangerous drug METH.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING DECLARDED PROBLEM PROPERTIES ARE NOT THE PROBLEM! PEOPLE ARE! AND UNTIL YOU FOLKS IN LEADERSHIP POSITION GET THIS IN YOUR HEAD NOTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE.

Typical Helgen - he looks like a punk and talks like one too. I thought Nancy Ostermen and her house of horrors was the problem Lee. Remember that?.....the house you thought was such good new that it was torn down?

Well now it is a year later and we've had 2 shooting by Diva's Bar, 1 other shooting and now this home invasion where 3 people are murdered.

This does not look to me Mr Helgen that your polciy of blaming buildings is working out so well. Do you have any new ideas, or should we just continue to blame buildings while the blood flows through the streets?

We'll be waiting for your reaponse Lee.

What do you expect people to do but blame the leaders? That's where the blame should fall, just as the sucesses get laid at the door of the same leaders when they want to brag about what they have done to get re-elected.

These current leaders are the ones who think the problem is the landlord and their properties, and it isn't. The problem is bad people and their crimes 1st, and the city leaders rediculous policies in adressing it 2nd, which just enables and compounds the problem. While the good leaders such as the fine Mr. Helgen are busy using the housing code enforcement program to address behavior issues as a cure to the problem, the problem keeps getting worse. It hasn't been a cure for years, and the inability of the leaders to recognize this is the direct fault of why the problem is starting to get out of control.

Bombastic talk is just what we need. Maybe people will start waking up and realizing what the real problem is.

As long as the City Council is so interested in housing code violations, how about if we get the list of their campaign contributors and then get some volunteers to go look at these people's houses to make sure they don't have any code violations. If they do, I am sure the city council would want to have the code enforcement department make them fix their homes to the same standards they expect of the homes that the poor people live in.

If anyone is interested, let it be known and I will get an email address to collect names and maybe Bob would post it here for all to see and take action.

The more I read and watch the news about the crime and how violent it has become in St.Paul really raises the question in my mind as to what the city officials are really trying to do...

Taking homes is not the answer to the problem, it takes arrests and rehabilitation to reform the people that are committing the crimes.

Taking and misplacing families is only going to contribute to crime in many ways. A person will commit violent acts of crime for money when they are left homeless and have a family that needs a place to call home, the cost of getting into a new rental unit is very expensive and there are a lot of people that will do whatever it takes to get that money.

Wouldn't it make more sense to work towards investing in the future of these families, what a few dollars spent today could hold for the future. I am not an expert but I do know the answers not by chasing them out of one house and neighborhood to another! The issues the individual person is having is what needs to be addressed.

How many deaths is it going to take before someone in the department realizes how obvious it is that what the city is doing now is NOT working. The city stands with seven deaths and summer hasn't arrived yet,as we know crime always increases as the warmer weather approaches. So the summer in St.Paul doesn't appear that its going to be a very peaceful one.

I would think if the city took half the money they spend running around looking for minor code violations and used it to implement some programs & activities that would interest juveniles at the same time teach them respect and self esteem for a future beyond crime it would be beneficial to the whole community.

When Mr.Helgen made his statement of how proud he was that my home was demolished it also told me that he really didn't care about the future of my children and I, or for that matter anyone else other than himself and his pride that him and his inspectors had followed through with the threats they made to me because I refused to become an informant for them, which is a direct cause of violent crime when a person becomes an informant there is a very high chance of violent retaliation that will follow.

I took the consequences the city had for me rather than become their informant and instead of violent retaliation I recieved the city officials retaliation that involved material items that can and will be replaced. My family and my life cannot.

Thanks Mr.Helgen you are turning a beautiful city into a city of criminals & many of them work right along side of you with your approval, goodluck.

Child describes gunmen barging in, demanding drugs and killing three

A St. Paul woman, her fiancé and her 15-year-old daughter were found shot to death inside their North End home this morning.

Police described the crime as a home invasion. No arrests had been made or suspect information released by this afternoon.

A family friend said a girl who escaped from the house at 292 Burgess Street told police five gunmen barged in, demanded money and drugs and then started shooting.

Another family friend identified the slain woman as Maria Lynn Mclay, 32. Mclay worked as a claims analyst at Travelers, the insurance firm in downtown St. Paul.

The slain girl was Brittany Kekedakis, a student at Como Park Senior High School. Brittany, who wrote for the school's newspaper, attended 7th and 8th grades

Otahl "T.C" Saunders, left, and Maria Lynn Mclay. at St. Bernard's School.
A relative of the male victim identified him as Otahl "T.C." Saunders, 31.

Mclay had two other children, ages 7 and 10, who were inside the home at 292 Burgess St. during the slayings, said a family friend. The children ran to a nearby relative's home and now are with police, she said.

Deon Hunter is a family friend who said he heard the 10-year-old girl speaking to police about the shootings. Hunter said the girl told gave police this account:

The gunmen broke in a back door, went upstairs and demanded cash and dope from Saunders, who told the robbers he only had $4. One of the attackers began stabbing Saunders with garden shears. The gunmen then went downstairs, began ransacking the house and then shot Saunders, Mclay and Brittany - all in the head.
Relatives and friends gathered today at a nearby home.

"This was a great family who was lost," one woman inside the relatives' home said.

Hunter said Saunders and Mclay had been together for several years. He said Saunders bounced from job to job and was popular with neighborhood kids. Hunter said Saunders took groups on children on outings and was planning trips soon to water parks.

Police responded to the house on Burgess at

Brittany McLay 6:42 a.m. Mclay was still alive when she was found, but was pronounced dead after being taken to Regions Hospital, police spokesman Tom Walsh said.
Police do not believe the shooting was random, but do not have suspect information yet. More than one person may have been involved, Walsh said.

No weapon has been recovered and authorities are not commenting on where the shooting occurred inside the house.

Walsh characterized the incident as a home invasion, and said the back door was damaged. He could not confirm whether the children witnessed the shootings or whether they had escaped or were released.

The shootings caused some in the neighborhood to worry about safety, but Walsh said the area should be secure because the

Walsh said the investigation could be lengthy, but that they are canvassing the neighborhood, looking for witnesses.

"This may be a long-term investigation, but this is not going to go unsolved," he said.

City Council Member Lee Helgen, who represents the area, went to the neighborhood this afternoon.

"I feel very shocked about what's going on. It's been a pretty quiet area," Helgen said.

He also said there would likely be community meeting next week for people to talk about the slayings.

Shocked North End residents have been talking about the triple homicide at Rice Street institutions such as Tschida Bakery and Capital Bank.

One police presumption - that the attacker or attackers may have known one or more of the victims - is no comfort to people like Mike Remmers, a business leader and president of the bank.

"It's a small community within the city here, and everyone's talking about it," Remmers said. "The neighborhood is changing, and we just need to continue our police presence. All the different communities are vying for police attention. We're trying to get our share, too. But how can you predict that something is going to happen at 6:30 in the morning?"

Three People Murdered In Saint Paul

At 6:42 this morning Saint Paul Police were called to 292 Burgess on a home invasion with people shot. At that location they found a 32 year old woman, a 31 year old man, and, a 15 year old young woman who had been shot. The 31 year old and the 15 year old young woman were dead. The 32 year old woman had signs of life and was transported to Regions hospital where, she was pronounced dead.

Police were contacted by two younger children who were unharmed in this attack and ran to the nearby home of a relative and called 911. The two are with family tonight.

This crime does not appear to be a random act of violence.

Several males, all believed to be African American, and at least one of them armed, entered the home by forcing the rear door. The group spent a period of time ransacking the home. They then fatally shot each of the victims. It is believed that the suspects then left the scene in a dark colored SUV.

Saint Paul Police homicide detectives are working with other investigative units in the department along with Minnesota Gang Strike Force members and, Minneapolis Police gang unit and other law enforcement partners to identify the suspects in this truly cold blooded crime. Saint Paul Police Chief John Harrington has said all the resources of the department and all the resources available to us are being focused on solving this crime.

He also stated that it is a particularly cowardly act

Saint Paul Mayor, Chris Coleman, Council member Lee Helgen, and Chief John Harrington have called a community meeting for Wednesday, March 28, 2007 at the Rice St. Branch of the Saint Paul Public Library 1011 N Rice St. to update the community on the investigation.

Police Chief John Harrington stated this is a particularly cowardly act to kill three unarmed people in their own home, and is personally asking anyone with information about this crime to call the Saint Paul Police Department at 651-291-1111.

Mr. Helgen according to your statements to the press you feel that the North End area is a quiet safe area, is that a pat on your back for yourself even though it is one of the dumbest statements you could possibly make at a time of a triple homicide in a neighborhood that has seen crime rise significantly in the past few years. Have you even considered looking at the amount of police calls to that general area before making an ignorant statement like that? I liked the earier comment bout the renters causing the crime but the city not dealing with it.

Now that it has been said, when I think back about it, that has been the case for amny many years in St Paul.

I have been a resident of St Paul for 30 years and I can remember scores of block club meetings where the city council sends out their aids, cops, inspectors and the focus has always been on the renter and landlord and how we should turn them in for this and that.

It's all a bunch of hogwash. Crime HAS become worse by the year and I am not buying into the arguement of blaming the buildings any longer.

Show me sonething that works Mr. Bostrom or I am not voting for you in November.

4:15 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I just left the area of this triple homicide scene, I drove around several of the blocks just to see what the progress is that Mr.Helgen claims he has made in the area.

Well we already have established that he has not improved crime rates at all just by looking at the amount of police calls to the area and what they are for. What I observed were many children out playing and groups of juveniles hanging out which is understandable they have just had a very disturbing act of violence occur in their neighborhood.

What I didn't notice was much for a community center(swimming pool) or teen center like we used to have, I also realized the area doesn't have a movie theatre, there is a library with limited hours, but there is nothing for the children to occupy their time or learn from other than the streets.

The area including Rice St. actually appears to be run down much worse than I ever remember it being, in fact I noticed a record shop that is called the "Hood CDs & More" or something to that effect.

If this is what Mr. Helgen calls progress and is proud of I would recommend that anyone that is even considering casting a vote his way drive through his area first to see exactly what Mr.Helgen has done to that community. I don't remember this much crime going on in the area before he started to distrupt the neighborhood putting additional stresss on the residents.

Its time someone is voted in that will look towards the future for these parents and their children. The future of these kids begins right at home with their home life, a stable home is where it starts. Keep shoving these families around and your going to keep the revolving doors in the criminal justice system going also.

As I read this, I can recall the city council meetings and the discussion about not adding more police officers to handle the gangs coming from Minneapolis. They argument was it costs too much.

Our mayor, a former city council member seems to take the view of four members of the city council (Kathy, Lee, Dave and Jay) that we have enough police and we should spend our money on "Green" causes. Look at Chris Coleman's buddy in Minneapolis. It seems Rybak spends more time in St. Paul than in Minneapolis where he is mayor or pretends to be mayor.

As I have been recently informed, the gangs are already settling in on the East Side as I write this, but Mayor Coleman does not care. Our mayor is so out of touch with reality it scares me.

I also got a nice notice in the mail about the upcoming fire inspections of my rental property and a bill for these services. Look at all the fire department inspectors they are going to have to hire to carry out the wishes of the city council inspection program. Look at who endorsed Mayor Coleman in the last election, the firefighters union. It looks like a little payback here by Coleman. This inspection program is going to create at least five new inspectors from the fire department inspection unit not to mention new code enforcement inspectors to carry out these inspections. Look at all the code enforcement violations they will find. Look at all the fines (income) this will generate for the city. Now look at your tax bill. It seems like Chris Coleman wants to tax us out of our homes and redevelop our properties that we have worked hard for so his buddies can get rich with our properties. All under the cloud of getting more tax dollars for the city.

With that happy note, I am going to bed and dream of what it would be like to be free of these monsters (Chris Coleman, Jay, Kathy, Dave and Lee (Little Boy) Helgen).

But after years of complaining by people in W. 7 th. area, nothing was done until the shoot was making Coleman's snow black.
Even Bill Dahn or Sharon Anderson, would have made a better mayor for St.Paul

Bill and Sharon both are mentally ill. I find it funny that most of you who couldn't run a Taco Bell think that you could a half billion dollar entitiy.

As stupid as you think people are, they aren't there yet.

Interesting how everything is about the landlord on this site. This site is a sound board for slumlords. Everything, including a horrible tragedy is traced back to the poor plight of slumlords.

All of you slumlords can fuck off.

Nice site you got here Bob.

If everything wasn't made to be the fault of the landlord by these gutless city leaders, maybe everything wouldn't trace back to the landlord, or slumlord as you prefer.

City leaders have lied to the taxpayers for decades about the neighborhood problems being tied to landlords and their buildings, and for decades the crime problems and liveability issues have gotten worse.

Well it just so hapens this is a new building and not a landlord, as these people happened to have owned the building, and they still get killed (hurt if you will for those government types that want to be politically correct) sitting in their own house minding their own business.

It was the city council that exploited the tragic situation of these people by coming out in the paper and talking about how much they have done with problem properties.

It was the city council who assured us it was good news that 14 Jessamine was torn down and now the neighborhood is better off now that the likes of Nancy Osterman have been run out of town.

It was the city council who made things so much better by trying to close Anellis's Bar and then Diva's Bar for a shooting that didn't even happen there.

For the landlords to respond to this is quite appropriate, and you know it. And for that matter, what's wrong with having a sounding board for any group that wants to alert the city taxpayers to things that are not going right in the city. What are you trying to hide?

No one is talking about You, Bill or Sharon
When they say they couldn't run a Taco Bell,Do they think they could run a half billion dollar entitiy.
Was Chris Colemans first job at Taco Bell?
Dave and him worked together in slinging the 1/2 Billion dallars of your tax dollars.
Chuck and the boyz kissing the feet of the statue of the Indian at the court house.
Lay off Bill, he is pointing the finger at you.
Just because Bill's a 1/2 Breed Indian, he said the other half is German.
He must have a large family.
let Bill run this town.

You slumlords aren't any better than Bill and Sharon when it comes to staying on topic and screaming for attention.

I think we should pass an ordinance making it legal to shoot felonious photographers.
