Hi All,

This concerns Sharon Anderson, an elderly politically active woman and candidate against Dave Thune for Ward 2 City Council seat.

Sharon telephoned me and told me that a City Code Enforcement Officer named Joel Essling(joel.essling@ci.stpaul.mn.us) telephoned her and was asking for entry into her home. He then showed up at the door seeking entry.

Many of you who are in the know, will recall the City some months ago tried to gain access to Sharon's house by claiming the water meter wasn't working, when it was.

I have told one story after another here at this Town Hall Meeting of the criminal like behavior of some of our City officials throwing elderly people, women and children out of their homes.

I'll say it right now, it will not be a wise move to pursue an attack on Sharon to obtain an objective of adding another home to the VACANT LIST.

Many of us are very upset with politics in this City. My message to City Officials is, wake up, the tides are swelling!

My guess is-

Here is the plan for Sharon's neighborhood. There is already vacant buildings all over Sharon's neighborhood. Most of those buildings were once affordable private rental housing. The City has been real busy in Sharon's neighborhood vacating affordable housing.

I bet somewhere there is sitting a developer with big plans for this area. My guess is soon the tipping point will come in which the City will say there is just to many vacant buildings in Sharon's neighborhood so we will declare the entire area blighted and bulldoze all of it.

Then in comes the big developer with big dreams and lines the Fat cats pockets and so what if there is a few causalities among the poor citizens of this area. So what, look what has replaced those affordable homes. This beautiful metropolis that overlooks downtown.

We no longer have to see this old dingy neighborhood with insufferable looking poor folk. Middle income and upper class people can live there now and contribute more to the property tax revenues.

My recommendation for Sharon is to get a hold of the Department of Justice, they were willing to help me on my issues with the housing code enforcement people, the only problem I had was there wasn't enough time before the bulldozers arrived. If I had only known the things I know now it would of been handled way differently, although its still not a done deal with me and the city. Sharon I wish you the best with the city and the nightmare they are causing you, if theres anything I can do to help you have my number...

For sure go to the FBI and complain. My friend had some of the same problems with a certain inspector and he went to the FBI because he didn't have the money to sue. They took his name and met with him abd wouldn't say if they were presently doing anything about this issue or not, but they did mention that they have had a lot of comlplaints, and it was in the tone of voice that they were sick of hearing about it. If enough people keep complaining they wil finally do something about if they are not already looking into it. Go for it Sharon.

I have another thought to add here. Sharon, they come over again let me know right away. I'll come right over with my video camera and get an interview with them. Ask them some of those questions the City Council is afraid to answer in a deposition.

And I'll post the video here at A-Democracy Town Hall Meeting for discussion.

Dear Eastside Resident in Ward 5,

Thank you for your commitment to our community and your faith in the future of Saint Paul. I would like to invite you to participate in a community discussion about issues facing the Eastside of Saint Paul and what the City is doing to make the Eastside a better place to live, raise a family, and do business. Below are the details for an upcoming meeting for Eastside Residents in Ward 5 that I hope you can attend:

Event: Ward 5 - Eastside Community Meeting

Location: Bruce Vento Elementary, 409 E. Case Ave.

Date: Thursday, February 15

Time: 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Over the past several years, the Eastside has benefited from a great deal of new investment and we have seen a number of positive changes resulting from this investment. We have new housing being constructed, people investing in their homes, and hundreds of jobs moving into the area along the Phalen Boulevard. However, there are a number of issues that require attention as the City plans for the delivery of services. I would like to have us step back and take a good look at the strengths of the Eastside and begin to move forward an agenda that reflects our values and our hopes for the future. As we do this, I will need your help as we make the case for additional public investment in our neighborhoods.

Please bring your ideas about how we can build stronger relationships, where we can focus investment dollars, how to use code enforcement more effectively, and what you believe will make a positive change in your neighborhood.

Even if you cannot attend this meeting on February 15th, please feel free to share your thoughts with me. You may send me an e-mail at ward5@ci.stpaul.mn.us or call my office at 651-266-8650.

Thanks for your time and best wishes for the future,

Lee Helgen

Councilmember, Ward 5

Helgen you're already using code enforcement to your advantage. What else do you want? Let's all step back and see the beautiful job that the city has done on it's citizens. You're agenda is one of greed in moving the poor out and the shiney professionals in.

You come in here as if you are completely innocent. You have no morals and you know that nothing will ever happen to you because you have pillars to hide behind, great big shiney pillars that will one day crush your soul.

Mr. Helgen the people are crying out for justice, oh Mr. Helgen here the people cry. They don't want another office building or condo project, they need jobs to feed their families. They need affordable housing so that they don't have to uproot their children and boot it out of the town that many have know since their childhood. Can't you find it in your heart to care more about people than development and a buck?

Only a heartless fool of a man couldn't hear the cries of the people. What do you hear when you close your eyes at night? The moaning of constructions equipment or the moaning of the hungry?

I think Helgen had a lot of guts to come here and I think it says something about the good quality of his character. Maybe we should give heim a chance. We could have a lot more positive dialog with him toward the subject of change if we were talking rather than humiliating. Did it ever occur to anyone that the City Council may be innocent in thing whole thing? Maybe they are being lied to by this code enforcement department. That might sound like a stretch, but what the hell, these inspectors have lied to everyone else about code violations to the point where it is almost common knowledge, why would they be truthful with the City Council?

You want to have a positive change in my neighborhood Helgen? Then clean out your inspections program and start providing an honest and fair service with it. I haven't heard anyone anywhere ever say they did not want to fix their property up. What they are saying is that they are sick and tired of being held responsible for the actions of others. What they are saying is that they are sick and tired of code enforcement being used as "crime control" when your Police refuse to arrest people for things done right under their noses.....choosing instead to go after innocent property owners because they are the ones who can be fleeced for fines. You should be wanting to bring in private investment to the neighborhoods, not public investment. The city can't even pay the bonds they have now, how you figure you're gonna sell more for the neighborhoods? Put some honesty and fairnes back into the city governemnt and you will have all the private investment you need buddy.

Perhaps councilman Helgen would like to hire Bob Johnson to guide him each day in what the average blue collar people in the city think of this councils leadership of the city. Maybe Bob coul dgethelgen a discount on some ads in the watchdog newspaper for the upcoming election season.

I lost all respect for Lee Helgen the day he allowed the city to demolish 14 E. Jessamine. He never took a moment to actually look at the real condition of the home and the fact that there were many threats made to me with the options I had according to city officials. Mr. Helgen if you only took the time to meet with people such as myself and hear the truth to the matters.... I have been clean for 3 years now and what the city did was follow orders from Joel Johnston to retaliate on me for not becoming an informant as I was ordered to do, instead I looked into getting treatment, my second option was to sell to Mr. Magners associate/friend or my house would come down... good job Mr. Helgren nice vacant lot you now have. Thats right you were proud of that " Good News 14 E. Jessamine is Gone" If thats the best you can do to be proud of your accomplishments I really do sympathize with you. You are in my prayers...

The city takes the tenants word as gospel when the tenant can't pay the rent, but when people with NO agenda come calling, the city don't even hear you. If someone had made the charge against a landlord that Nancy made against the city official that was trying to shake her down for her property, they would have spent every resource they have on making the guy guilty whether he ws or not. To this date I have not heard anything abiut any kind of investigation into this matter. Why is that?

I think the city is up against a good fight with Sharon as her being there latest target of attack! "News Flash City Officials" I don't think you will get away with this as planned for one of your next condo developments with your greedy contracting buddies.

I don't agree with you. When these people talk to ordinary people, they are so far removed from reality that they just wind up insulting your intelligence with the things they say and expect you to believe.

This is nothing but an election stunt, we should show up at the meeting and ask what has he DONE.

Of course its an election stunt! Do you really think Lee Helgen cares about anyone of us here at A Democracy? Think about what he has approved to happen to the citizens of low income, elderly and the minorities in St.Paul and then tell me he cares about anyone other then himself and the upcoming election. I do think that it would be a wise choice for many residence and former residence of St. Paul to attend this meeting and speak up for their rights and let Mr. Helgen know how they feel about his approach/attack tactics that are being used. Along with the lack of honesty the code enforcement is using to condemn homes. Couldn't hurt to matters any worse than they already are..

Well Mr Freedon Fighter Bob, you got an opportunity here.

Are you and Sharon and Bill and all of the Anonymous posters on here going to just let this opportunity to stand up, be heard and get some media coverage go by?

You got real people coming to an open forum. Why not call this CM to the mat?

Why not ask him all of the questions you conclude here? Why not ask him Nancy's questions?

You won't be asking for him to answer, you'll be asking to expose him to his own constituents who may not be aware of the other activity.

This is an opportunity to put the first nail in his political career. This is an opportunity to send a message to the rest of them that not only will you go after them legally in court but, politically on the campaign trail. They won't be able to turn anywhere without having to be held accountable.

What are you going to do?

I'll be there.

I would definately like to attend this meeting and ask some questions... Never know I might even get lucky enough to get some answers... Anyone feel like joining me? If you need a ride I can also provide you with a ride. I think the more of us with issues, complaints, questions and etc... that attend this meeting the better chance we have at getting results.. Let me know if you would like to join me.

MR.HELGEN INVEST IN ST.PAUL? YOU TRIED TO RUN ME OUT WITH YOUR OUT OF CONTROL CODE ENFORCEMENT DEPARTMENT. I MADE A DIFFERENCE WITH EVERY PROPERTY I BOUGHT. I MADE IT BETTER AND OFFERED IT TO ANYONE AT AN AFFORDABLE RATE. I DIDN'T DISCRIMINATE. I'M A GOOD LANDLORD AND INVESTOR. I KNOW THIS BECUASE I CAN LOOK AT THE PROPERTIES I HAVE PURCHASED IN ST.PAUL AND HONESTLY SAY THAT THEY ARE OPPERATED AND IN BETTER SHAPE THAN WHEN I PURCHASED THEM. ISN'T THAT GOOD FOR ST.PAUL? ISN'T THAT WHAT IS NEEEDED AND WANTED?

LAST AND BUT NOT LEAST CHECK INTO STEVE MAGNER AND HIS AFFILIATION WITH ONE OF THE BIGGEST VACANT BUILDING HOME BUYERS IN ST.PAUL. IT IS YOUR JOB TO MAKE SURE THIS CITY IS FAIR AND EQUAL TO ALL IN ST.PAUL. YOU HAVE BEEN TOLD NUMEROUS TIMES ABOUT MAGNER BEING INVOLVED IN CURRUPT ACTIVITY. IF YOU STAND BACK AND DO NOTHING THIS CITY WILL PAY BIG AND YOU WILL BE KNOWN AS A CITY COUNCIL MEMBER WHO WAS WARNED AND DID NOTHING.

A LANDLORD AND INVESTOR THAT YOU CALLED UPON

So that you are aware: you will be scrutinized and you will have more officers stationed at your section than for any other individuals.

So that you remember: There is power in numbers and you still have the same rights as any other individual.

Helgen should have used the correct protocol and emailed Bob with this invitation so that he could correctly post it. That's what's wrong with the lot of them, they don't use any kind of protocol and go off the chart and do what they want.

10:32, I didn't hear from you at the meeting, Couldn't make it or the cat got your tongue?

You didn't miss anything. For the most part it was a big bore.

I will say though I had a thought Helgen had a plant there pretending to be a concerned neighbor. This guy was hating on rental properties, cracks in side walks on and on.

Even if he wasn't a plant Helgen was anxious to get his name like he would be Johnny on the spot to assist this guys every complaining whem.

Just the kind of person these people in the City like. They use them to ride a coat tail of look we are helping the community when in fact they shut rental properties down and the crime just goes some place else. And they rape the property owner.
