You think this is bad, a recent story in the press in California tells of two cops who beat a homeless man to death and are now charged with second degree murder. The video is online and appaling. It's as wicked as the Rodney King Beating but worse. Onlything is, it was a white homeless guy who was beat to death and nobody rioted like thet did in L.A. back in 1992 with Rodney King. But I don't see blacks rioting and stealing and burning and killing over a white guy. Anyhow, this current story here in St.Paul is pathetic and the damages settled for are peanut's and the lawyer who agreed to accept this reward is a whimp for not taking it to trial and make these MFs pay. Because of the settlement the cops who did this get to keep their jobs. Hell, why not give them a citation for bravery !!

Jeff,

Maybe Chief Tom Smith will give these two a medal bravery?

Chief Smith even made Todd Axtell a "Senior Commander" even though this guy is up to his neck in dirty dealings with the Finney crowd. Come to think of it, Smith is good friends with Finney. Now don't you all feel safe? When Axtell was commander of Vice, he looked out for Finney's people.

Well it's good to know someone here knows what's going on from the inside. But is it good for St.Paul, citizens and the reputation of law enforcement that officers such as the ones here are let off the hook through what I call tax payor hush money ( Settlement money ), to chicken shit lawyers too afraid that if they take the case to the hill that their careers will never be the same because they got thousands instead of millions for settling cases like this ? Beleive it or not, depending on the lawer, they will only take on Government so far. I have personally heard of lawyer storys of them being harassed and their legal careers threatened for coming down too hard on Government. It's true !!!

Jeff,

Sometimes the victim in a situation like this isn't an anti-government crazy who is suing the government because they are on some insane cause.... Sometimes, they are real people like this person who feels that the officers went to far in their actions and wants to be JUSTLY compensated for what occured.

If that is the case, then what you have is the potential for a settlement where the City gives the citizen what they feel is a reasonable compensation for the slight that they feel occured to them and the City does not have to admit guilt or find that the officer violated the law.

It does not seem like the officers "beat" this man, only that they were more aggressive in their arresting methods... particularly considering the circumstances of the call.

I am guessing that the citizen feels that the City paid for how they were mistreated and some justice was done.

Why should the city or any other Government entity pay a dime or even a penny for that matter, if the city employees did nothing wrong ? We all know the typical settlement line given by Government entities who's employees wrong it's citizens. Spare me Chuck !! The citizen feels the police went to far you say ? He doesn't have to say a dam thing, the medical evidence speaks for itself Chuck. But you would have us think that the cops arresting methods caused a " Slight Brutal Beating " that the city feels is deserving of $86,500 small ones LoL !!! Who is the attorney representing this victim ? What a pathetic piece of shit he or she is for accepting such a small settlement. Attorneys like this need to be disbarred. How does Government ever learn it's lessons if all they have to do is pay off some monkey ass of an attorney to accept peanuts to settle a case potentially worth millions ?? It's when the city has to pay millions of dollars before they even begin to feel any remorse for what they do to people. And you Chuck, while you seem like a nice guy, you try to cover the cities ass too much I don't know why either.

Bob G, St Paul has not lost its soul. The people in authority have lost their soul, people like magner, essling dawkins etc. etc.
Does our city council members know what these guys in code enforcement are doing to some of their citizens????

Sorry Jeff, didn't see your question. There is a real simple answer as to why I try to explain what happened rationally and why the people in the government do what they do... because WE (you and I) are the government. These people work for us.

The attitude on this site and with the far right in general is that the government are a bunch of alliens that landed from another planet and are trying to control us.

Having served in the government and met both DFL and GOP office holders, I can tell you they are all humans. And, most of them make logical choices when forced to.

In a case like this, clearly something went wrong. The citizen is looking to be reasonably compensated for an injustice he feels occured to him. The City looks at these cases and says... here is the chances that we will win the case... here is how much we could pay if we lose... is it a safer bet to settle or take it to court? If it was one in ten that they would lose a million dollars, then this is a good settlement, not based on the case even just based on the betting odds. If the guy wanted a million and it was 50/50 they would lose a million, then 100% of the time the lawyers would advise going to court, no down side. They can only win.

Despite what you think, the city government wants smart cops and Saint Paul use to have the highest salary for entry level cops in MN to make sure we always had first choice of recruits. Today, with budget cuts we fight to keep up with the pay in safer suburban districts.

Its a tough job and I wouldn't do it.

chuckie, do you really believe the more money you pay some one the more intelligent they are.
The reason st paul has a bunch of dumb lazy employees is not because the pay scale is lower than the suburbans, its because there is a lot of nepotism going on in all city departments. There have been a lot of highly qualified applicants that were passed over because they had no relatives or friends on the inside that could pull some strings for them.
I do agree with you about st paul wanting smart cops because the dumb ones aren't smart enough to cover up all the corruption.
