"No group knows better the pulse and life of a city than its realtors," said Cynthia Schanno, "which is why I'm deeply honored and encouraged to have won the endorsement of the Saint Paul Area Association of Realtors." Schanno--a first time candidate for any public office-- received the major endorsement after all candidates from Ward 2 were interviewed by the Association.
Mr. John Periard, Senior Vice President of the Association said: "The board felt strongly that our beloved city desperately needs someone with exceptional business skills. We also felt that it needed someone who could work cooperatively--and not divisively--with others. Cynthia Schanno was the obvious candidate who embodied both qualities."
"I simply told them what I thought the current problems were and what my solutions are," said Schanno, when asked why she beat out a 16-year incumbent for the coveted endorsement. More to the point, Schanno said "The sixteen-year incumbent is part of the problem, not the solution. Unfortunately, he has alienated various constituencies in Ward 2. In these awful economic times, Ward 2 deserves a council member who is respectful, listens to all views and solves problems rather than passes the buck."
"Housing is a crucial concern to everyone in Saint Paul," Schanno observed, "and only by making Saint Paul a desirable, job-friendly place can we expect people to be able to have the income with which to purchase homes." Schanno noted that unemployment remains stubbornly high and that the incumbent has no pro-growth plan to offer Ward 2 residents. "You can't just be on auto-pilot and think you're doing an acceptable job," said Schanno, "at least not in the real world of the private sector. I've built a successful business from the ground up and know what it takes to reduce obstacles and encourage job growth."
Noting that there are 169 vacant buildings in Ward 2 alone, Schanno remarked "These buildings are more than eyesores. They are a visible indication of failure and possibly of a city in decline if we don't take action. As a lifelong resident of Saint Paul, I refuse to stand idly by while conditions worsen. I'll work immediately to reverse this sorry state of affairs on my first day in office."

Schanno bought a condo on Spring Street on 11/18/2010.... So, come election day she will have lived in Saint Paul, ten days short of one year... or at least she will have owned property 10 days short of a year.
She continues to own a house in Mendota Heights that she has owned since 1995.
Not that I pay attention to these things or anything....

You do have to admit that it is at least kind of ironic that she lives in a housing development on the Riverfront that occurred at least in part because of Thune's fighting for the relocation of Sheppard Road away from the river.
Prior to Thune's election in 1989 the plan was to keep Sheppard next to the River and build a grade sepperated interchange (with the west bound turn lanes) where the Science Museum is now.
Thune campaigned on that and pressed a small majority on the council to move the road to where it is now... over the objection of the Chamber of Commerce who wanted the grade separated interchange (which needed the road pressed to the river to work).
So, she lives in a place Thune envisioned and would not have happened but for Thune.
Irony.

OK my info is a little off. Sharon lives in ward 7 not 6. She should be running against Kathy Lantry.
I have pondered why Dave has never over the years contested Sharon running in ward 2. I personally believe Sharon running in wards 2 benefits Dave.
Dave has a strong voter base, when perennial candidates like Sharon run against him all it does is siphon votes away from other candidates in ward 2 who might have a chance of beating Dave.

Saint Paul, Minnesota (October 20th, 2011)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
"There have been 300 more burglaries compared to this time last year," said Ward 2 candidate for Saint Paul City Council Cynthia Schanno, "yet 16-year incumbent Dave Thune sees nothing wrong with this." Schanno made her remarks in the face of rising crime statistics in Ward 2 and throughout the City of Saint Paul generally.
"People are entitled to a decent level of protection from the City to which they pay so many taxes," Schanno said. "I will focus on both crime prevention and prosecution when I am on the City Council." The rising crime rate has left Schanno "shocked" at what she claimed was Dave Thune's indifference to the problem. "This is a serious issue yet Mr. Thune has little or nothing to say about it," Schanno noted. "In fact, at this week's Candidate Forum he essentially admitted he was running for his last term in order to pad his pension. This is both a disgrace and a disservice to the people of Ward 2 who deserve much better."
Schanno has repeatedly emphasized the overall economic climate of Saint Paul and the need to eliminate job-killing regulations and an entrenched hostility to the private sector. "Certainly there is a correlation between economic decline and crime. I have long said that we need to make Saint Paul a welcoming place for job creators," Schanno observed, adding that "indifference in the face of escalating crime sends the wrong message at the wrong time. Career politicians looking out only for their own interests contribute to our decline. I'm here to serve notice that a new day is dawning for Ward 2."
Schanno said that she would work vigorously with local public safety officers to more fully understand the reasons for the recent increase and in fashioning the most effective responses to it.
"We can't wait," Schanno said, "we have already waited too long to face this problem head on. I will be deeply engaged on improving public safety from the first day I am on the City Council."
