St. Paul City Attorney John Choi resigned today, announcing he's taking a job in the private sector.
Choi said he didn't want to allow his campaign for Ramsey County Attorney to taint the office he has held since Mayor Chris Coleman appointed him in 2005.
"I don't want even the perception that the advice we give or actions we take to be about me running," Choi said in an interview with reporters.
Choi, 39, said he has accepted a job practicing civil litigation with the Minneapolis-based firm McGrann Shea Carnival Straughn & Lamb.
Choi submitted a letter to Coleman Friday, but the mayor wasn't able to accept it until today. Earlier today, Choi announced his plans to his staffers, breaking down in tears at one point, one staffer said. They gave him a standing ovation.
In a statement, Coleman praised Choi's leadership. He's expected to appoint an interim replacement soon, perhaps within days.
I think Mr. Choi finally realized what he was defending, and how bogus it is.
The city decision makers decided to take the considerable deadwood in inspections, and point it at the low income people of the city.
It wasn't thought out very well, and the fallout is massive, and the racketeering lawsuits haven't even hit the pocketbook yet.
Pity. It used to be a decent city.
I guess he thinks he's got the county attorneys race in the bag. He's going to have a tough fight on his hands running against David Scultz. Schultz is going to win.
Choi is a good friend of mine.
He is as a clean as they come and has been recognized as one of the best City Attorneys in the country- actually he was recognized by his colleagues across the nation as one of the best.
He is running for County Attorney. He will be endorsed by the DFL, and will go on to beat the other DFLers in the race to the end, Schultz and Pust. There are no Republicans declared yet, not that it matters. Cold chance that a Republican can get elected county-wide.
Choi will be the next Ramsey County Attorney.
Eric
Then he can preside county wide over corruption of the type that's in St. Paul. If he had any integrity at all he would have quit a long time ago when he saw what the city is doing to property owners. Just another political hack that goes along to get along
Choi sure gained a lot of weight!
Sure am glad I do not live in Ramsey County.
In choosing to defend St. Paul against these racketeering and human rights charges, it appears Choi's views are not determined by principle, but by the situation.
If he becomes County Attorney, it will be a real loss to the people of Ramsey County.
It sounds like Choi is similar to his buddy Eric, where he can only find superficial problems with St. Paul's housing approach.
Could it be that his views are determined by what they city can get away with or how long they can run someone around the block waiting for them to drop and not what's the right thing to do when your clients screws up?
He'll never beat David Schultz! Democrats AND Republicans like Schultz!
Hendrickson is named interim St. Paul city attorney

Shhh. Choi doesn't want you to know this but, believe it or not, there are three other very qualified candidates in this race!
Tammy Pust

David Schultz

Dave Pinto

Dave Pinto is another good friend of mine who would make a great County Attorney (I just happen to think Choi is the best overall choice). If Dave doesn't make it as CA, he will be a great judge or legislator in the near future.
Tammy and David do have good backgrounds too. I knew Tammy from her running for council days and met David last summer at the DFL picnic and researched his experience and find him to be a great attorney for the people.
The DFL has four great candidates for this office and I can't be more happy about that.
Eric
