Answer to Lawyer Dan Dobson et al
I must have missed the message Steve and Rick refer to, so I am in the dark
as to what we are talking about. Could Steve or Rick enlighten us as to the
offending content?
As a lawyer, non-practicing, I am aware that litigation can be a huge threat
to any non-profit. While corporations and large institutions have the
resources to fight frivolous litigation, it could all too easily destroy a
valuable group like this. I am happy to offer my services if needed to fight
any threat to this group.
That said, I am a little frustrated in that Steve Clift recently asked for
volunteers to help with the group. I wrote Steve and the group back and have
yet to receive a response.

Civility Matters, but never when it is at the expense of Free Speech!
This issue continues to be a critical problem for SPIF as far as I and other free speech advocates are concerned. Any organization concerned with the promotion of a civic dialogue and which uses the name "democracy" in its title, should always be more concerned with the spirit of the law (rule) and less with its strict application when it comes to freedom of expression/speech.
Too many of our fellow citizens have been marginalized, reprimanded or turned away completely by this forum in a misguided attempt to create a false sense of civility. It is a false sense of civility because true civility comes as a result of mutual respect, not because it is demanded but because it is earned.
Civility without freedom of speech means that SPIF will silent many voices that should and must be heard in our community. I've heard a few here argue that they find the use of strong or vitriolic language abhorrent and that it has no place in civic discourse because it alienates people. This is a counter-intuitive notion, since free expression and many of the ideas espoused by its practitioners, have almost always been seen as radical or uncomfortable by the institutions they engage. I would argue that no one is welcome in an institution that does not embrace the fundamental principles of freedom of expression. Furthermore, it is often the ideas that make us uncomfortable that become the impetus for positive change (see Civil Rights Movement).
The argument has been made that "personal attacks" have no place in this forum, again I disagree. I will point out that this is different from "threatening" behavior or bullying which has more to do with intimidation than freedom of expression and has no place here. Instead, this relates to a person who makes a false or inflammatory assertion, or whose character can be called into question and the idea that they can and should be called on it (by fellow participants and not strictly a moderator). If you characterize this as a personal attack, it leaves little room to refute their argument and thus allows the falsehood to remain. Moreover, it invites the perpetuation of the behavior. Creating a less civil, less honest, less relavent forum.
If SPIF is truly interested in democratic civic discourse from the citizens of St.Paul it should seek to promote it through open and honest dialogue not through the strict application of the letter of the rule. Rules which alienate some of the very people you seek to engage.
The application of the "rules" have been called fair, however fairness cannot exist without true justice. In other words, if you want fairness you need to seek ways to apply it in a deliberative, contemplative and judicial way, not just by following the strict letter of the rules. Yes, its messy and it can even be arbitrary, but in the end it will bring the civility SPIF so strongly advocates for because it engenders respect for its honesty. The thoughtful application of the rules and the idea they lean toward allowing greater freedom of expression is comforting to anyone who loves our democracy.
Finally, it will make little difference if SPIF ignores my arguments here as they've done in the past, because the final arbiter will be the people of St.Paul. If they choose to engage here in a forum which ignores the principles of freedom of expression, than in the spirit of a society that values the free market of ideas, they'll just have to wait until something better comes along. However, if SPIF addresses these concerns and works towards promoting principles of free speech than it will have heard the voices it for so long has ignored.

State of Sonora, Mexico is angry at the Flood of Mexicans returning to Mexico!
Nine state legislators from the Mexican state of Sonora traveled to Tucson
to complain about Arizona ’s new employer crackdown on illegals from Mexico .
It seems that many Mexican illegals are now returning to their hometowns and
the officials in the Sonora state government are ticked off about it.
A delegation of nine state legislators from Sonora was in Tucson on
Tuesday to say Arizona ’s new employer sanctions law will have a devastating
effect on the Mexican state.
At a news conference, the legislators said Sonora , (Arizona ’s southern
neighbor, made up of mostly small towns,) cannot handle the demand
for housing, jobs and schools it will face as Mexican workers return to their
hometowns without jobs or money.
The Arizona law, which took effect Jan.1, punishes employers who knowingly
hire individuals who don’t have valid legal documents to work in the United
States. Penalties include suspension of, or loss of, their business license.
The Mexican legislators are angry because their own citizens are returning
to their hometowns, placing a burden on their state government.
‘How can they pass a law like this?’ asked Mexican Rep. Leticia
Amparano-Gamez, who represents Nogales . ‘There is not one person living
in Sonora who does not have a friend or relative working in Arizona ,’ she
said, speaking only in Spanish. ‘Mexico is not prepared for the tremendous
problems it will face as more and more Mexicans (working in Arizona and
sending money to their families) return to hometowns in Sonora without jobs,’
she said. ‘We are one family, socially and economically,’ she said of the people
of Sonora and Arizona .

The United States is a sovereign nation, not a subsidiary of Mexico, and
its taxpayers are not responsible for the welfare of Mexico’s citizens. It’s
time for the Mexican government, and its citizens, to stop parasitically feeding
off of the United States and to start taking care of its/their own needs. Too
bad all the US states don’t pass a law just like Arizona’s. Maybe that’s
the answer, since our own Congress will not do anything!

Under the direction of a Clinton official who orchestrated the pardon of a major-league drug trafficker, the federal agency that oversees lawful immigration is preparing to legalize millions of illegal immigrants.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is getting ready for the huge influx of applications that will bombard the agency when President Obama,s plan to legalize the nation,s estimated 12 million illegal aliens becomes law, according to a major newspaper report.
The agency,s director, Alejandro Mayorkas, says his goal is to be ready to expand rapidly in order to handle the massive increase in visa applications under Obama,s comprehensive immigration reform plan. As the Homeland Security agency responsible for overseeing lawful immigration and granting visas, USCIS is equipped to handle applications from about 6 million immigrants a year.
If Obama,s amnesty measure comes to fruition USCIS could receive that many applications in just a few weeks, according to Mayorkas, who recently distributed $1.2 million in grants to help migrants adjust in America. In order to efficiently handle the increase, Mayorkas is implementing several measures to process applications faster. Among them is a method of receiving visa forms in the mail and another that allows illegal aliens to start the legalization process through a simple mail-in registration form.

I live and work in a border state overrun with illegals; they make more money having kids than we earn working full time; today I had a 25 year old with 8 kids that’s right 8; all illegal anchor babies and she had the nicest nails; cell phone; hand bag; clothing etc; she makes about 1500 monthly for each; do the math. I used to say “we are the dumbest nation on earth” now I must say and sadly admit: YOU are the dumbest people on earth (that includes me) for we elected the idiot ideologues who have passed the bills that allow this; sorry; we need a revolution; Vote em all out in 2010.

If the immigrant is over 65, they can apply for SSI and Medicaid and get more than a woman on Social Security, who worked from 1944 until 2004.
She is only getting $791 per month because she was born in 1924 and there's a 'catch 22.'
It is interesting that the federal government provides a single refugee with a monthly allowance of $1,890. Each can also obtain an additional $580 in social assistance, for a total of $2,470 a month.
This compares to a single pensioner, who after contributing to the growth and development of America for 40 to 50 years, can only receive a monthly maximum of $1,012 in old age pension and Guaranteed Income Supplement.
Maybe our pensioners should apply as refugees!
Consider sending this to all your American friends, so we can all be ticked off and maybe get the refugees cut back to $1,012 and the pensioners up to $2,470. Then we can enjoy some of the money we were forced to submit to the Government over the last 40 or 50 or 60 years. And not to receive a increase for 2010 Vote them all out of office…….

Zeituni Onyango, a tall, frail-looking woman in her late 50s who walks with a cane, had fled Boston to stay with relatives in Cleveland last fall after media attention erupted over her case. She was spotted at Obama’s inaugural festivities in January and, according to neighbors, returned to Boston a few weeks ago for her third attempt to fight removal from the United States. She had been living in the country illegally since she was ordered deported in 2004.
Now the woman Obama called “Auntie Zeituni” and described as a kindly woman who kissed him on both cheeks and guided him during his trip to Kenya 20 years ago, is in a national spotlight, where her case is seen as a test of the Obama administration’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws. Critics, outraged that she is living in taxpayer-funded public housing while thousands of citizens and legal immigrants are on waiting lists, are scrutinizing the case for political favoritism. Others caution that she may have legitimate grounds to stay in the United States.
