Officials continue to investigate what caused a fire at a vacant St. Paul home early this morning.

Firefighters were called to a single-family home at 963 E. 6th St. at 12:18 a.m., said St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard. When they arrived, they found the home's first and second floors "heavily involved," Zaccard said.

Inside, firefighters found holes burned in the floor. They believe the fire started in the first-floor ceiling and spread to the attic. The home was vacant but undergoing renovation, Zaccard said.

The department hasn't ruled out anything, including the possibility that faulty electrical wiring sparked the blaze or that it was intentionally set, and continue to investigate, Zaccard said.

About 30 firefighters responded to the single-alarm fire.

"The fire had such a head start and then it spread into attic," Zaccard said. "They had to spend some time chasing it down."

The home's value is $100,700 and it is considered a total loss, Zaccard said.

Hi All,

Cold weather brings on a lot of fires.

I am sure many of you remember the story of Frank, Larry and Lenny. The not so neighborly neighbors! An update to this story a few months back was Lenny's passing.

Here is another update on this home in the 900 block of 3rd street.

A little over a week ago Larry's home had a real bad fire. Late in the evening when all were sleeping, a passer by seen flames coming from the roof of the home and warned the occupants it was on fire.

Mary Rose 20, and her daughter Rosalina 4, barely escaped the fire with their lives. Mary Rose shut the door to her unit as she was fleeing and the roof on fire, fell into the unit she just evacuated.

I suspect overloaded electrical wiring caused by electric heaters.

This is a good argument for bringing an old home up to current code standards.
