The St. Paul City Council approved a policy Wednesday requiring construction projects that receive more than $200,000 in city or HRA funds to meet sustainability standards.
Only new projects and major additions would fall under the requirements of the policy. It allows builders to choose between seven different rating systems, including the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Silver for New Construction system.
Anne Hunt, a deputy policy director for the mayor's office, said the measure was the first of its kind in Minnesota.
"We're really a leader in the state, and there are only a handful of cities who are really doing this," Hunt said.
Using grant money from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, Hunt and a number of organizations worked for two years on the measure's language.
Representatives from the University of Minnesota and the St. Paul Port Authority worked with groups such as the St. Paul Riverfront Corp. and the Building Owners and Managers Association to reach an agreement.
"This has been a long time coming," said council member Russ Stark, who introduced the resolution.
Hunt said the advisory group looked at more 30 major cities across the country to come up with plans.
