St. Paul Police Sgt. Ann Bebeau was off duty, jogging through downtown, when a vehicle passed by her with a pair of occupants apparently fighting inside.

Near Wabasha Avenue and 12th Street, Chief John Harrington recalled Tuesday, a juvenile male suddenly sprang from the vehicle, chased by a man carrying an aluminum baseball bat.

There, alone, stood the 5-foot-3 Bebeau, with no badge, no gun, no cell phone -- and no backup.

Her first thought of the events of a year ago, she said Tuesday, was: "Why me?"

But there at the intersection, too, is the Peace Officers Memorial, where Bebeau stops during her jogs, and she said to herself: "You have your backup."

The assailant, after striking the youth several times with the bat, threw it aside. When he proceeded to punch the victim in the face, Bebeau grabbed the bat and struck the suspect in the arm. The victim fled, and after a momentary standoff between suspect and officer, the assailant ran, too.

Bebeau flagged down a car, called for assistance on a borrowed cell phone, and helped see to it that the suspect was arrested and eventually convicted of malicious punishment of a child.

In the face of danger

On Tuesday, Harrington and Bebeau shared her story during a Medal of Valor ceremony recognizing Bebeau and seven other officers -- plus police dog Boomer -- for "courage and dedication" in the face of danger.

In explaining her motivation, Bebeau, a 1982 graduate of Johnson High School, said that she'd been raised an East Sider, and that she still lived its values, one of which says she will strive to protect the vulnerable.

Also receiving valor awards were officers Michael Carroll and Robert Howell, who in March 2008 shot and wounded a man swinging a samurai sword and carrying a knife, and five officers and a K-9 who were part of a shootout in April that was described as a case of "suicide by cop."

Boomer retires

The dog, Boomer, was shot in the muzzle after St. Paul musician Robert Jeske aimed a gun at officers and was shot by three of them: Adam Bailey, Brian Casey and Douglas Wilson. Also honored in the incident were Boomer's partner, officer Patrick Murphy, and officer Heather Kuchinka.
Boomer, a black and tan German shepherd, recovered from his injuries, but after a few months at work, Murphy said, it was determined he no longer could perform adequately during prolonged searches.
Tuesday was Boomer's last day on the job, Harrington said.
Now, Murphy added, he is the officer's pet, and will "stay at home and run around the yard."

Good Cops - BAD Cops

I was standing by Dorothy Day Center today and watching the policeman keeping the peace.
People were eating launch from the Jesus Delivers Truck, the officer was in a bad mood after telling people to move along because some had a few drinks.
He had a girl by her hair and was pushing her 50 feet tords the Police Car
# 1543 at 3:00 pm her name was Terry he shoved her in the car and the child, he let her go and took the child away.
The girl rushed in the center to use their phone to make a complaint about how she was treated.
There were 40 people watching the assault on the girl.
Ater seeing this
He best go to a anger management classes.

I bet when Jim Metzen received his ticket for DUI, that he was treated will.

almost twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

"Senator Metzen ," Messerich said. "He was treated like anyone else."

Metzen, 61, a seven-term DFL senator from South St. Paul, told officers that he had three or four drinks, Messerich said. He was released and his wife picked him up around 4 a.m.

Metzen is a law maker, and thinks he can getaway with breaking the law.

Type in Jim Metzen and see the pictures of him drunk.
He should have known better then to drive after drinking.
But how could he know anything, he a DFL State Senator.

Did he ever go to AA for his drinking problem.

"....plus police dog Boomer"

So, they awarded a medal of valor to a dog? Is that right?

They award city jobs to dumber animals who aren't nearly as clean as a police dog.

Giving medals to dogs is pretty harmless compared to much of what this moronic city does. I say let 'em focus on dog medals, and get out of most of the rest of the crap they do.

Swiftee, the dog took a bullet in the face. It may have saved its trainers life.

The gesture is a way to recognize the work that these K9s do to protect Saint Paul.

If you had either a heart or a brain you'd get it.

To each his own, Chuck. But the day I equate heroism with an animal is the day I start voting Democrat....'cause then I'd, like, get it.

I have an extremely courageous hamster...can I nominate him?
