St. Paul wants more words on its sidewalks.

Following the success of last year's inaugural "Everyday Poems for City Sidewalks" project, the city and Public Art St. Paul once again are seeking poetry submissions from residents.

People turned in more than 2,000 poems last year, and 20 winners were chosen. Their verses are sprinkled throughout the city's nearly 1,000 miles of sidewalks.

"Our sidewalk poetry effort brings art to the outdoors where it can surprise, inspire, and make us laugh, smile, and think," said Mayor Chris Coleman.

Amateur and professional writers of all ages are encouraged to submit two poems, up to 300 characters, on any topic appropriate for public reading by May 29. Entries are only accepted online.

Up to five people will receive $150 and their words stamped in concrete. Winners will be announced at the end of June.

For more information, go to www.stpaul.gov/poetry.

This is so stupid.

Perhalps another means of keeping " Residents " from leaving St.Paul by appeasing them to stay happy by seeing their name / words or their kids name / words on the sidewalk.

When I look down on the sidewalk, I see gum, cracks, holes, this really makes me happy.

Now for a real story about wasteful spending, how pissed will you be when you learn that teachers in minnesota are going to get their stock market driven pensions bailed out by the state.

What shape is your pension in ?

Hey Bob, your genius never ceases to amaze me.

What 'deficit spending' are you talking about?

Do you know what that term means, and what you're even saying?

You people are so ready to be against everything that you don't take the time to understand what you're talking about.

That moron that posted below just took some rumors and misinformation and put it out there.

We get it. You people on here hate the government of the city and are too lazy to a damn thing but, bitch about it.

Have some coffee and candy cigarettes.

...and once again this is not General Fund Monies being used to do public art.

It isn't monies from your property taxes or LGA.

I would guess this is one of those Federally funded road beautification projects. My guess is City and Public Art Saint Paul applied for a grant and won. And it must have occurred under the Bush administration, because they have been doing it for awhile.

So, blame that guy in Texas if you don't like public art being a part of road projects.

... and again if we didn't win the grant then all of the cool sidewalks would be somewhere else. The money would still be spent. It doesn't look like it costs much to make up the molds to score the sidewalks either guys...
