$10M will go toward makeover of McDonough Homes complex

One of St. Paul's oldest public housing projects will get a $10 million infusion of federal stimulus dollars, the St. Paul Public Housing Agency announced Thursday.

The money will go toward revamping 120 row houses at McDonough Homes, west of Interstate 35E in the city's North End. The funds will help complete a $35 million overhaul of the 580 units at McDonough, which opened in 1952.

"It really is a total makeover," said Al Hester, housing policy director for the Public Housing Agency.

McDonough houses a diverse population of low-income residents, but Asians make up the largest minority group by far, including a sizable Hmong population.

Improvements include everything from new wiring to bathroom fixtures as well as making the grounds more community-oriented. The contract was awarded to Frerichs Construction Co. and is part of $3 billion distributed to public housing agencies across the country through the $787 billion federal stimulus package.

"We think we're one of the first housing agencies in the country to get the money under contract," Hester said.

Another $1 billion in discretionary grants through the stimulus package is also available, and the St. Paul Public Housing Agency is hoping to secure some of those funds as well.

The agency will also spend $591,000for new sprinklers and fire alarms at the Iowa Hi-Rise complex and $363,000 to help 42 Summit-University duplexes fit into the neighborhood better.

The St. Paul Public Housing
Agency faces a crushing demand for its services, with 6,310 families waiting for a spot in public housing and 8,017 families waiting for Section 8 vouchers.
The Section 8 waiting list is now closed, but when it opened for three days in 2007, more than 11,000 households applied.

One More Scam
This public housing sure will start up some union jobs.
Now they say they are helping the poor.
Witch is not true, they are only helping people that one of our
ex mayors bought here to St.Paul so we could get some of that federal money to bring people from other countries. 'Hmong'

$10 Million is a nice hunk of change, who in city housing or government gets a commission off that.
Is the contractor a friend of some ones at city hall.

"Check It Out".

I was going to post last night that this should just about stick a knife in any arguement that private landlords and the PHA are "simalarly situated," ending anyone who could possibly believe that the landlords have a case, but you guys just don't get how the world works at all do you?

Folks the PHA is getting a direct award from the Fed's to do rehab work on the property. This would imply in Federal Court that they aren't the same as any other landlord. Second, did you see where the PHA hasn't even opened the list for new section 8's since 2007? That means the landlords earlier RICO claim that the City was trying to put them out of business to bring business to PHA is absolutely totally insane.

New Park being built in St.Paul, without your ok.
Tenth Street and Robert Street, that's the Old St.Paul Police Station and also the PEDRO"S Lugarge building.
Call Chris Coleman and the City Council, ask them why we need another downtown park?
Did they scar the buyers that had plans for that land out of investing in St.Paul ?
St.Paul has more plans then we have money.
That you to the Democratic St.Paul Government.

"PHA helps the poor in case you didn't know."

You gotta ne kidding me! Helps the poor how? By making them live in mold infested units?

Or is it by making them live in high rises where the elevators fall or trap people for hours at a time? Or perhaps making them live in homes that need $40,000.00 in repair.

Help the poor my ass.
