"We're dealing with the Mississippi River. We're dealing with currents," Dolan said. "We're going to have to do that slowly and safely."

Late Wednesday, seven people were reported dead, 20 were missing and more than 60 were injured, authorities said. This morning officials lowered the number dead to four, but they expect the death toll to rise as the search effort turns to recovery today.

People pinned and dying in the wreckage of the 35W bridge Tuesday night asked rescue workers to say their goodbyes to their families, Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan said Thursday morning.

"There's people pinned, severely injured. We couldn't move them. It was an obviously dangerous situation with stuff still falling." Dolan said. "The decision was made to leave them."

Dolan said number vehicles remain in the river this morning.

"We have all the license plate numbers of cars we can see," Dolan said. "Divers are trying to collect from those underwater."

The Coast Guard has closed the Mississippi River for five miles both upstream and downstream from the site.

Near the collapse site, more than a dozen recovery workers including divers from a variety of agencies gathered around for a briefing early this morning.

A Coast Guard boat patrol the river. The Army Corps of Engineers is analyzing the remaining bridge structure to see if it's safe for divers descend on the wreckage, according to sources near the collapse site. Dolan said the corps has surveillance footage of the actual bridge collapse.
Recovery boats continued this morning to survey the wreckage. Divers were expected to soon enter the water, sheriff officials said just before noon. Dolan said crews were first plotting plotting the location of the submerged vehicles.

I just want to say I think they jump to a conclusion ruling out an act of terrorism.

Structural engineers haven't even looked at this bridge yet. No investigation what so ever has been done.

I am not saying it is terrorism, I just think there should be an investigation before it is ruled out.

Bob the 2001 report suggested that the bridge was suffering from stress fatigue, predicted cracks and failure and recomended replacement, but for the high cost. The May 2006 report said there were fatigue cracks in the supports. The bridge was then placed on the "watch" list. Had it been given one point less, it would have been put on the critical list, and the legislature would have been informed of the crisis.

There is only one terrorist that made this bridge goes down and he has a house on Summit Avenue paid for by all of us.

When he finally calls for a special session for a gas tax to pay for a bridge that has fallen down, we need to demand that the Lafayette Bridge is fixed NOW. That bridge is listed as in more trouble than the bridge that just fell into the Mississippi.

I am aware of these previous inspections Chuck. I watched the coverage for over 9 hours now.

Chuck even if it did just fall down, we need to know why. What in the design of this bridge is flawed? Or, was it an act of terrorism? There will be an investigation.

The span over the river of this bridge dropped like a controlled demolition. I am not saying it was terrorism Chuck. I am saying I will not assume it was structural failure without hearing from an investigation first.

The physics of all this is very interesting and I can hardly wait for the conclusion of the investigation.

Watching this thing from the safety of my living room I can not help but think of the lives who were saved by mere happen chance.

The kids on the bus and the cars near the edge, the people on the span of bridge which now forms a small island on the river.

My heart goes out to all those who have been effected by this tragedy. Very sad!

And Chuck if the Lafayette bridge is in the shape you claim it should be shut it down immediately until it is repaired. The city is condemning homes in the name of safety. Why not a bridge that threatens thousands?

Chuck -

I have supported you in the past here but that statement was completely idiotic. The Governor was elected by a majority of the people who knew he promised not to raise taxes. Services obviously would have to be cut to meet that promise. Voters had to know that not everything would stay the same.

However, I don't think this has anything to do with the bridge collapse. The bridge wouldn't have been slated for repair even if the Gov had signed the legislation passes by the DFL controlled legislature. We have many consultants stating that reports showed it was okay.

What I bet we find in two years is that there is a stress on this type bridge that the "experts" don't know about or how to test. Maybe we find 1000's of bridges near their breaking point because of this...

Chuck - I can't believe you are already succumbing to partisan blame here buddy.

Dancing on the bodies of the dead is not all that attractive.

And at your age, probably not all that safe.

Channel 5 just had a structural engineer on. His name was Ted Gliminos. < spelled wrong I'm sure.

He has been in the profession 50 some years. And he is "mystified" as to why this bridge came down. He claims all the previous inspections have NOT reported FATAL flaws in the bridge that were of concern.

Chuck blames Pawlenty and Obstar blames Bush.

Remember when Bush influenced mother nature and had Katrina hit Florida? What the heck does Bush do for Mother Nature to have influence like this over her?

Remember how they disrespected a deceased man and turned his funeral into a shameful disgusting political circus?

How low can they get for a vote?

Where is the morality?

Coleman Statement on Bridge Collapse Tragedy

(Saint Paul) - Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman released the following statement today on the tragic bridge collapse in Minneapolis.

“In an instant, life in the Twin Cities was forever changed. Our hearts are with those who are lost and with their families. In the days ahead, our public safety personnel and public works professionals will remain on the scene assisting State and Minneapolis personnel in any way that they can with recovery operations.

We have seen in the last day what it means to be a Minnesotan. People have come together, risking their own lives in some cases, on behalf of their neighbors. There are people alive today because of their efforts.

I have been in touch with Mayor Rybak and other City and State officials. I commend the Mayor and the Governor on their leadership during this difficult time and have made it clear that our resources are at their disposal. I also want to commend our Police and Fire departments on their outstanding response to this situation. We remain committed to providing support resources to the City of Minneapolis.”

Look folks if you are listening to all of the news, you will find out one truth that everyone in the government knows, we have plenty of bridges that are in dangerous condition. I fear for my life every time I cross the Lafayette Bridge. I remember the arguements at City Hall about the closing of the High Bridge and the Wabasha Bridge. They are now inspecting the Lafayette Bridge every 6 months.

That is not a good thing.

The problem is the same all over the country. We need money for road repair!

You're all washed up Repke. I don't know why people even listen to you any longer. You are so biased, I wouldn't trust you for the time of day. And don't don't think we have forgotten that post that was on here a while back about how the city leaders put you out on the sidewalk and wind you up like some kind of toy to turn you loose on the city to go spread their DFL crap whenever they need damage control. I'm afraid your day has come sir (and I use that term loosley) with all the reporting of what's going on in the city. You chose the wrong side to defend Repke, and now your gonna pay. There will be no more money for you at the non profit spigot cause it's getting shut off. People will throwing you out of the bars after the elections in November cause they ain't gonna have the way you're running this city any longer. Pack 'r in and head out Chucky, I'm afraid all the non profit opportunities for you have dried up here!

I was watching FOX news this morning. It was reported the governor is picking the 3 of the worst bridges in the state for repairs.

So Chuck maybe the Lafayette bridge may make the list.

According to the news last night the 3 bridges that were designed the same as the 35W bridge were going to get immediate inspections and attention, that report did not include the Lafayette bridge. There are a few bridges in worse condition then the Lafayette brifge according to the reports released by channel 5 news team.

My girlfriend and I drove over this bridge last week. It shaked violently as a truck passed by us.

Very upsetting circumstances.

Hey, maybe this is something that we can be on the same side on. No blame game, jsut get the darn work done. If the Governor goes to get money for 35W and three other bridges, we want our bridge fixed NOW!

The Lafayette Bridge is already in the planning stage and they are scheduling it for 2011. There is only one thing stopping it from being done in 2008-9 MONEY.

So, if there is agreement at the state that it needs to be done or believe me it wouldn't be slotted for 2011, the bridge that fell down wasn't even into the planning phase yet, let's put the pressure on our delegation (all DFL'ers so I'm willing to squeeze them) that they have to get the bridge funded and then the GOP here can push the Governor to sign it!

Here's a list of metro area bridges in WORST shape than the one we just lost. This was done by the hand-picked Met Council so save your liberal bashing. Governor Pawlenty and the Republcians promised not to raise taxes and we got a shitty infrastructure and higher property taxes. Thanks.

Maybe I'm just a political hack but, I use to know of some places where politicians won by promising to deliver on the basics: better public safety, trains (or buses) running on time, good public works and better schools.

When did tax cuts become the king of promises?
Isn't it ironic that some run for a government job to cut the budget of government instead of delivering better services?

I'm not an engineer, but this bridge looks awful spindly and inadequate to handle over 100,000 cars and trucks a day.

Yes, opportunism rears its ugly head. Parkway truck opening advocates know full well that rerouting trucks to 35E would create a long parking lot. It’s already that way at rush hour now. Opening to trucks would result in a mile of idling semis and passenger cars and no benefit to inter or intra state trucking.

I think its very sad that these people would use a tragedy to further a change they advocate for every year at the legislature. Fortunately, we have some protection in that the determination to keep the Parkway truckless was via a court order with participants signing from summit hill and from west 7th street (chuck repke, then president of the west 7th federation signed it).

Of course the precedent is that george bush used 9/11 to stir up false patriotism which has led to the deaths and maiming of more innocents than the late sadam h. There's something very sick about those who would use tragedy to advance their own selfish causes.

Finally, I don't know about anyone else but I never take the lafayette bridge. I feel for the bridge engineers who regularly give their professional opinions as to safe maintenance standards and conditions but are over-ruled by their politically appointed bosses who don't want to be fingered for raising taxes to fix our infrastructure. Outstate minnesota has the same problem. Sadly, without the spectre of multiple deaths, the state turns a deaf ear to their pleas for safe maintenance of hiways and bridges. No one will call for emergency federal funding for a bad bridge in ottertail county. not enough people could die in one accident.

"no new taxes" - what hypocrits.
