Hi All,
The City of Red Wing was trying to do back ground checks on it's City Counsel candidates and I hear the City of Saint Paul wants to do back ground checks on Rental Property Investors before issuing a rental certificate.

How can they feel it no background check should be required for the city council members when they do background checks on citizens for evry little move you make? I do property management and yes I am required to do background checks but I do not deny everyone because of a previous felony.... I take into account what the crime was, how long ago and where that individual is at today. I feel everyone deserves a chance to correct their lifestyle, nobody is perfect. But a person that is going to represent a community should definately undergo the same treatment and background checks as the rest of the world...

Nancy you are a changed person. People change, and to use their past against them is wrong.
If these background checks are to come about for landlords to get a rental certificate, what the city is actually saying is if you have a criminal history you are excluded from the rental property industry in Saint Paul.
What other businesses shall we do back ground checks on before issuing a license. Barber, mason, grocier?
This is the state were there is no second chance in some peoples minds.
I never said I agree with background checks... I have a terrible background do you really think I want it to haunt me the rest of my life, I know first hand people change. What I was saying is yes the city council members should be subject to the same treatment that they putt the rest of us citizens to for every move we make and that is background checks. Like I said I am required to do them on people also but I also look at what changes they have made in there life and don't put them in the rejection pile because of there background... Sorry I wrote the first post in a confusing manner...

Nancy makes a good point. What is good for the average Joe is certainly good for our elected officials.
What is Red Wing afraid of, gangsters taking over City government? I guess they don't want a City government resembling Saint Paul.
Only a back ground check wouldn't of helped in Saint Paul. Not all criminals have a record.

To be a mason, a background check is done when accepted as an apprentice.
While you only have to sign a form stating that you are of good character to get your barber's license, many salons and shops do a background check before hiring you on. Especially the higher class clientile ones.
To open a grocery store, you don't need anything. To sell certain prodects and especially of you take WIC or food stamps or EBT and have a credit card machine- you will have a background check done on you.

Hey Greg, what you said sounds a lot like censoring to me, or at the very least an attempt to stifle someone. I won't even mention that you said it would be impossible for her to have a "shot" comment. When I read the newspaper, I don't read everything from front to back. Others will find what she writes and reports and the amount thereof to be of interest. If you want to editorialize something, you should write to the Dispatch about their one-sided reporting. You could also help over at Edemocracy with their monitoring, they could use the help, much like the city in using ordinary people like you and me to fight crime. The way bloggers are stifled and reprimanded over there, the more they are dropping off like flees, just as houses in St. Paul. Well off I go to find my cape and mask.

This blog will bring a lot of people together. Bob has already brought in Bill Dahn, Sharon Anderson, Nancy and others who will expose the corruption going on in the city. Eventually, the landlords will talk also, and I am sure when the time is right their story will be fascinating to hear. That should in turn bring in more people to the blog who will also have opinions about the rights of people being violated. This coming year will be great to watch, especially with an election coming. It's starting to look like the lawsuits and the City Council elections are going to be on a collison course with each other.
