Ramsey County officials decide whether or not to throw away tax payers money
Old jailhouse could become condos
Ramsey County officials are renegotiating a development agreement for the county's old riverfront jail in downtown St. Paul.
Long in the works, the project has been delayed while developers reconsider whether to completely replace the jail, perched on the Mississippi River bluffs near the Wabasha Bridge.
Ramsey County property management director Jolly Mangine said the developers might convert the building to condominiums instead because replacing it altogether could prove too expensive. The project is paired with a planned 33-story condo tower adjoining the old West Publishing headquarters on Kellogg Boulevard.
The developers, Welsh Cos. and David Bernard Builders, are expected to pay $3.9 million for the jail and the adjoining property.

Bob- Yeeeks, do they think we really need more condos in ST. PAUL? It's nuts! The realestate market is starting to take a dive. I like how the author of the article above called it the OLD JAILHOUSE. It's the newest building on the river front. And it is also the best looking building on the river front.
The sale price of 3.9 million. Us tax payers paid a hell of a lot more money for this building than their selling it for. I thought buildings appreciated.
ONCE AGAIN, THE BEST USE OF THIS STRUCTURE IS A TRANSITIONAL HOME FOR THE HOMELESS!

"Build it" They will COME! lol
Let it stay as it is and they will still come!
The homeless shelter is a good idea. I bet Mary could get people in there right away to maintain the facility. Salvation Army would probably help out too.
Come to think of it I bet a lot of charitable organizations would get involved.
Now your dreaming. The people who currently hold power in the City only seek to deconcentrate poverty.
Setting up a homeless shelter some would say only defeats the efforts that have already been under taken to deconcentrate poverty.
Most of the affordable housing sits empty with "Registered Vacant Building Notices" in the windows.
The moral thing to do would be to make the jail a homeless shelter. That will not happen for another reason also. It's the all mighty dollar. A homeless shelter does not pay property tax. Or bring people with money as residence to downtown.
How about some type of long term treatment facility where the participants are court order and need close supervision instead of putting drug users in a correction facilty, where they come out only to have learned other criminal bahavior from the association they have in the correctional facilities.I would think with long term treatment the chance of recovery and turning the addict into a productive tax paying citizen would be dramatically increased. It would save money in several areas, it would also help with the over crowding of the jails leaving more room for the violent offenders.(43% of the incarcerated are drug related).

Now thats a good idea Nancy. I happen to know that people are sleeping on the floor in the New Jail.
How about instead of the city targeting landlords for tenant behavior the city targets the tenant that is involved in the criminal activity and throw them in this downtown jail. This way the criminal isn't teaching the young youth in the neighborhood how to act.
Ya know they wouldn't even have to renovate it to make it a homeless shelter.
The tables are steel and bolted to the floor. There is many cells with indistructable beds, toilets and sinks.
Landlords complain about tenant damage, these tenants couldn't wreck much there.
How bout that I agree with you whiners on something.
Madd Hatter or "hater" is more of the proper feeling I get from you. I would be willing to bet the grass is greener on your side of the road too! You seem to have some real issues with life in general, guess what though? There is help out there even for people like you and I think you desperatly need it. Any human that could come across as being as self centered and selfish as you needs help. Do you not even have a feeling of any kind for another human being? Not everybody has had an easy life but every person deserves a chance at life and sometimes that requires alittle or in some cases alot of help. Just alittle friendly advice you should be first in line.
