Hopefully after reading this you can see where I was coming from in our first disagreement. I read this a couple of years ago, its powerful. Thanks for posting it.
Eric M.
Hi All & Erik,
I understood your anger Erik "after" I learned of your race.
It was a very painful mistake for me because I am very sensitive to these issue's and have been for many years. Simple put it was stupid of me to try and make a point with you as I did.
I had hoped you would understand my mistake after I explained it to you..
I have been called a "White Nigger" & "Nigger Lover" because I have black friends & black family members.
I was accused by the police of picking up a hooker(my son's mother is black) I guess it was hard for these guys to believe a white guy could be married to a black woman and riding in a car with her.
2 of my closes friends one who is married to a Japanese woman and one who is married to an American Indian thought it was funny to rib me at a get together for dating a black woman. When I said you both have your nerve they responded with Bobby she's a N...er.The same white guy told his sisters if they ever dated a black man he would kill the N...er. Strange this ex friend of mine has black friends.
My step father refused to have my son who is bi-racial (black and white) in family photos during holidays so I quit going to his home and refused to talk to him for 6 years prior to his demise. I couldn't subject my son to his bigotry.
On the other hand the black side of the family welcomes me with open arms. Spent a number of summers on the black side of the railroad tracks in Indianola Mississippi staying with black family members.(Home town of BB King)
I was in lawn care in the early 90's. Several family members who are black and one of the infamous Lindsey's were looking for work, so I gave them a job.
2 of my long time customers who were elderly white men quit the service because I had hired black men. The one man came right out and told me if I didn't fire those N...er's he was quitting my service he wasn't having them on his property.
I told him he wasn't GOOD ENOUGH FOR MY SERVICE...
I went to Webster and Marshall in the early 70's. I was often spit on and assaulted by blacks because I was white.
I could write you a book of experiences like this.
I know the depths of racism and the impact it can have on a society.
I could have learned to hate my black brothers from my experiences in school, instead I came to understand.
I am sure many of my black peers in grade school and junior high had over heard their parents and other adults speak of their anger for whites over Martin Luther Kings death and the oppressions and civil rights violations they endured. Hatred is learned.
Many of these kids would come to school and punish us white students with their angers.
Then there were others that clearly were taught like I was not to be judgemental of someone because of the color of their skin.
Erik what concerns me about you is you are an influential black leader of the City and either you do not recognize what is happening to minorities in this City in regards to deconcentrating poverty through the use of code enforcement or you don't care. OR you, like some, think this is a wonderful thing to help minorities.
Drive through Frogtown and the red zone of the East side. There is one rental property of affordable housing after another that in most cases housed a black family now sitting vacant.
The plan to spread the economic cost of concentrated poverty to suburbs and beyond is not working for minorities. They face transportation issues, institutional racism, racism from neighbors on a large scale in these predominantly white communities.
I have spoken with many many minorities from as far away as Zumbrota who moved there for section 8 housing because the grants have been limited in Saint Paul to deconcentrate poverty. The stories are always the same for the most part minorities are not finding happiness in the burbs and beyond.
Let's address our social ills with courage and not spread our troubles around. I have spoken with youth who are gang bangers. Ya know if an adult shows some interest in a kid and gets involved providing guidance and hope, these kids are anxious to please.
Why is it so hard for people to understand these social ills can be addressed with vigorous mentoring programs.
Myron Orfeild reported on restructuring local government,"we tried social programs to bring the lower economic class to the middle and it hasn't worked". I say it hasn't worked because they use the wrong approach. MENTORING will end our social ills as we know it. We as tax payers will gain productive citizens, lives will be saved, our subsidised housing cost will decrease, we will end generations of poverty for some families, we will cut police, court, corrections and health care cost for the poor. And last but not least we will make it hard for racism to point the finger.
Why is this so hard for people to understand? Unfortunately when someone isn't a good parent we as a society become responsible for there children. Let's do the right thing for all our brothers and sisters.
I can't end without saying the most heinous crimes in this area have been committed by white people. This doesnt get the press minority crimes get. Part of that institutional racism thing.
Thank you for the comment Erik,
I am sorry all I got carried away a bit here. These issues burn deep with me.
It takes a village to raise a child.
Hi Everybody,
My dad is a King of Kings.
Love you Dad,
Buddy Johnson from the East Side.
As a white person, and after reading the story, I feel ashamed of the generations of white people who put this jacket on me.
So whatta gonna do about it....keep looking the other way while the city deliberatly breaks the law to move the N's out of the city?
How many black families deos Chuck Repke have residing in his "slum tower" up there on White Bear and Maryland?
How many times has Kathy Lantry has a black person over for dinner at her house?
There is another advantage to getting rid of minorities from the inner city.
IT SECURES A WHITE LEADERSHIP AT THE VOTING BOOTH!
Yeah but the minorities always vote DFL for the most part. Isn't that strange? They usualy vote for the people that screw them over, and then they are mad at Republicans! How does that work?
This topic reminds me of an incident I had last Saturday with the Anoka Co. Sheriffs, I happen to notice the sheriffs outside one of the apartments (I do property management) for the second time within an hour, only this time there were 2 that pulled in like a rush I decided to check on the matter, I was informed that the call was the second and it was a follow up on a supposedly big black guy selling drugs, I informed the sheriffs the allegations were not of truth that I had been in the general area doing outdoor work on the property and would have noticed it.
Well after that I keep a close eye on the apt. and continued to plant flowers and do outdoor yard work, with 30 minutes the Sheriffs were back, same accusations... I told the sheriffs I have a black family that live here but they have not been out of there apt. today period! I asked the sheriffs "Do you see a big black guy anywhere out here?" And that I hadn't taken my eyes off the paricular apartment since their last visit and at this point I told the sheriffs I would like to file a complaint against the caller for false allegations. At this point I was pissed and told the sheriffs enough is enough this harrassment of my tenants is uncalled for.
The outcome was they said they would check into the reports, well they did not return after that. I found it out of line that being that I have one black family here now that immediately it is assumed (labeled) that they are involved in illegal activity, They are a very nice working family in which the lady is an ex-drug counsler (due to being a cancer patient she is unable to continue working).
Nancy
Just wondering....ummm....were they chased out of St Paul and that is how they happen to be at your place?
Maybe they would like to try and start a class action lawsuit against the fabulous city that never does anything wrong?
Kathy Lantry just doesn't like blacks - she wants them OUT of HER neighborhood any way she can get them out. How many landlords has she 'pursuaded' to evict their black tenants simply because she didn't like their color? She wants an all-white middle-class city to lead.
I wonder how these corrupt city officials will like jail. Bet they won't find an all white population there. Do you think they'll get along?
Bob, you stated your point very well. This should be basic common sense. The Civil Rights movement was in the 1960s and here we are 40 years later and we are still enforcing the Black Laws of the 1860s. Hello.
Bob your statement, "MENTORING will end our social ills as we know it. We as tax payers will gain productive citizens, lives will be saved, our subsidized housing cost will decrease, we will end generations of poverty for some families, we will cut police, court, corrections and health care cost for the poor." is right on. I could have not said it better.
It is sad that we as a society still put one race down over another. I was in Wal-Mart today and received the help from many different persons of color. All very nice, some needed help with English, but so what. When my grandparents came to this country they did not know how to speak the language either. Do we forget?
Historical point here. After the Civil War, after Lincoln was killed and Andrew Johnson then became President there was a group of "Radical Republicans" that pushed for Civil Rights over the objections of the Democrats and President Johnson. The Democrats did everything in their power to keep the blacks slaves down (Black Laws/Codes). It took these Republicans until 1877 to pass the 13th and 14th amendments. Such heroes as Rep. Elliott 1877 (one of the first black congressmen) voted for these civil rights, but he was not allowed to be seated in congress due to the color of their skin. How sad is this in America.
Your Friend,
Anonymous in St. Paul
PS. Bob you still owe me that cup of coffee.ybotq
The foundation of our society is family.
