Flash from the past at A Democracy Town Hall/ Not yours to give!

Hi All,
I thought it would be interesting from time to time to highlight some topics from the past. Back in 2006 this topic didn't get much of a response. I hope some of you will take the time to read it. Hopefully this topic will explain much of what is wrong with America today.

One of the first things that comes to my mind is earmarks and pork barrel legislation. Get rid of them! The Tea Party is on the right track.

It is a nice message from the past that there have always been a part of the country that is OK with their neighbors starving and there is a part of the nation that believe that the point of we the people creating a government is for the purpose of promoting the general welfare of all of the people.

This conflict is as old as time.

The greedy, selfish, uncaring, claim the moral high ground that somehow those in the past that shared selfish values are the voice of reason and they neglect to mention that even then they represent a small minority that served the interest of their wealthy masters.

Crocket was a boob who was a one term congressman that was thrown out of West Tennessee and ended up dead in Texas.

From the start our nation has been best represented by those who are willing to care for the widows and orphans instead of serving the rich and powerful.

Crocket never represented the interest of his constituents and got the boot.

One example- 40 years of welfare handouts hasn't been good for Americans Chuck. It has made able bodied men and women dependant on government.

I don't have time right now but I will post examples of wasteful spending. Tax payers "money" wasted by greedy politicians.

Oh Bob, that is so sad.

It is unfortunate that the world is not the simple place that it once was.

If you were strong like bull and just as smart, you use to be able to make a decent wage doing physical labor. Those days are almost totally gone.

I wasn't having welfare that did that.

Bob... you have posters here that you know are living on one form of government assistance or another and they are so brilliant they advocate a government that would cut them off in a moments notice. (Proof that they need assistance.)

Damn near half the country doesn't have a pot to piss in and you think that the problem is that the government is to good to them.

Amazing.

High unemployment, recession and global economy has caused this legitimate dependancy on the Government for assistance.

Of course there are abuses of the welfare system that get passed on from family to family.

Our own Government is partly responcible for creating the loopholes in the welfare system that allow illegal immigrants and droves of refugees to make welfare a way of life in the interests of national policy spurred on mostly by democrats.

Chuck, if the government wasn't bleeding tax dollars from entrepreneurs and average Joe's our country wouldn't be experiencing record deficits.
The government wouldn't be printing money devaluing the dollar. Commodities are going to take a big hit as the dollar is devalued. Among other things expect to pay higher food cost in the near future folk's.

Chuck you are one of those well intended but ignorant people who think government can fulfill all of our needs. I put my faith in the generosity and entrepreneurial spirit of Americans. And Chuck, my hard earned money hasn't come from tax dollars like yours has.

I think we need to get back to the SIMPLE basics of what made this country great.

I have to hit the hay, I have a full day of work tomorrow. Property rights meetings, roof snow removal, roofing inspections and material returns.
I don't sit around and wait for a government handout. I am proud to be an American patriot, an entrepreneur.

My response;
Folk's I couldn't sleep and leave this statement sit here without addressing it.

People in poverty and the wealthiest blog or read here. Many of you out there do collect assistance of some kind or another. Many of you need this money and I am OK with my tax dollars helping the truly needy. Most Americans feel this way.

The problem is the system has been abused for years at the expense of the working class. Welfare is a very small piece of the pie when you take into account all the wasteful government spending.

Do we need poems embedded in side walks? DO we need abstract paintings on the street at corners? There is more!

12:11 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bob,

The truly needy are the people you know who get welfare or SSI and those who abuse the system are those that you don't know or don't like...

Its the classic right wing garbage that your masters train you to spew so that you can enjoy a few of their crumbs.

The one fact of the American economy is that it has been its most productive when is has the highest top end tax rates.

What the fat cats count on is that people like you never understand even the basics of how the tax structure works so that you will continue to spew this drivel.

Tax rates are based on profit not income. High tax rates encourage successful businesses to hire more employees and upgrade equipment because those costs are deducted before taxes. In high tax rates on the top, you either spend the money on your business or you give it to the government.

The same is true with high tax rates on the top end earners. Bob are you self employed or ever been self employed? Then you have some idea about the deductions that are available to those who have money that aren't available to those who aren't. Lease a car for your business... deduct all of the cost from your taxes. Have money and a high paying job? Take a trip to Europe and study "investment opportunities" and deduct the trip from your taxes.

The W2 earners get nothing like that....

Let's do a simple one. How many people do you think know that the SSI tax stops once you hit $106,000? So, for those making $200,000 or above are actually paying a lower overall tax rate than those making $50,000 because once they hit $106,000 the 15% SSI goes away.

Nice deal if you can get it.

My point Bob is that your wealthy masters that train you to bark this nonsense would love nothing else than to see the focus of discussion on something like "2% for public art" rather than on getting the fat cats to pay a fair portion of the tax burden.

So, when cities squeeze a small portion of the budget to have starving artist get paid to do something, JUST LIKE FDR DID DURING THE LAST DEPRESSION, Bob would rather see them not work and collect welfare.... no, we don't want to pay them welfare, so, they need to starve so that his masters can take another government paid for trip to Europe...

In liberals the area normally associate with courage and caring.

It makes a lot of sense.

My response;

Your starving artist should have their ass on a street corner peddling their art. If their art is any good it will sell. If it doesn't sell they need to find a job or create one. I don't believe tax payers should be raped of tax dollars to support these people or any other able bodied person.

The study you linked, obviously written by libs, it is hog wash!

Here is some links for you Chuck.

Liberals stingier and stupider than conservatives

Are conservatives smarter at economics than liberals?

Even 5th graders got this one right!
Are you smarter than a fifth grader? Most libs aren't.

We’re all familiar with the mainstream media and popular culture myth: conservatives are stingy, ignorant knuckle-draggers, whereas liberals are enlightened societal benefactors.

Now, we have yet another survey demonstrating the cold reality that the opposite is true.

Several months ago, we noted an independent Pew Research survey released October 14, 2009 entitled “What Does the Public Know?” Included in that study was a section labeled “Partisan Knowledge Gap,” which asked a series of twelve knowledge questions and compared the scores of Republicans, Democrats and Independents. The questions centered on such matters as identifying the current Federal Reserve Chairman, the current unemployment rate and the issue to which “cap and trade” relates.

The startling Pew survey results would surely trigger a terrified expression even on the Botoxed faces of Senator John Kerry or actress Julia Roberts, who once stated that, “‘Republican’ comes in the dictionary just after ‘reptile’ and just above ‘repugnant.’”

Republicans outscored Democrats on fully ten of the twelve Pew questions, with one tie. On only one question of twelve did Democrats outscore Republicans, and even then only by a 67% to 62% margin. (For the record, Republicans also outscored Independents on six of twelve questions, with one tie and five on which Independents outperformed Republicans.)

Unsurprisingly, Pew attempted to sugarcoat the lopsided results under the phrase “no partisan differences on knowledge of health reform, but Reps more aware in other areas.” They wouldn’t want to offend Brian Williams or Katie Couric, you know.

This week, we received confirmation that the Pew survey results were no anomaly.

Hey, my thing just said what parts of our brains were bigger... I mean your the ones that assumed that bigger meant it worked better or was dominant... the study didn't even say that.

As to the Wall Street Journal - are you smarter than a 5th grader questions, you have to love them.

They could have simply have said this... We asked people if they agreed with our conservative positions on economics. Questions like if you cut taxes on the wealthy then by magic poor people will have more... strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree; and whoever agreed with our right wing position had the question right. And amazingly liberals got almost everything wrong and even 5th graders who had no idea what they were doing guessed 1/2 of them our way (I mean got it right).

What a joke...

Bob,
Why is OK for your friend Bill Dahn to live off the government but, he is able enough to operate a computer, file paperwork and run for office and deliver meals and other odd work as a volunteer. That sounds like an able-bodied person who hasn't worked in 22 years and lives off the government and complains about the government. But, he runs with your crowd so he's OK for being a sponge and parasite?

You talk about Chuck's source but don't present a counter to them. Instead you one up him by going to the Center for Ind. Freedom site which for those of us who were around was founded by DC lobbyists and Phillip Morris Tobacco in 1998.

Its board, mission and 'research' are colored in a neocons viewpoint. These guys are the opposite and enemy of the Tea Party. Their ilk brought us Bush, two unfunded wars, record deficit spending, Rumsfeld, Huessain, Maliki etc, etc.

They are not conservatives for the average person. They are the elitists.

Don't be insulted by this, be informed.

Your last two links by Klein and Buturovic have been debunked.
They took a survey using one of Zogby's internet panels, which is by far the worst polling instrument that they could have selected. The panel was not weighted and was not in balance.

They asked 16 "questions of basic economics", as the Journal's sub-head describes them, and arbitrarily included eight of them in their analysis but threw the other eight out.

Questions were poorly phrased and some questions were nothing but biased trivia. For instance, "In the USA, more often than not, rich people were born rich?". (Note the definition of "rich" is wide open -- there's really no way that you'd know it in relation to the individual idea. Some may think a $150,000/year others may put it at 10 million a year.)

Don't take my word for it. Set aside a few minutes (an hour for some of you) and readthe study Bob presented for yourself, then read the comments by fellow economists
who discuss the methodology.

Be forewarned, its kind of wordy and you'll have to keep up. See, real intellectual research and study in not about telling you how smart you are already, its about challenging you to take it to the next step. You folks here don't want to be challenged, you want someone to wipe your nose and tell you, you're the best.

One more thing, Fox News viewers consistently rank to be the least informed people year after year.

In the "truth seeking mission" of the blog... here is a historian that disputes the "Crocket story"

Tuesday, October 20, 2009
"Not Yours to Give": A Fable Re-Examined
A number of years ago, The Crockett Chronicle published an article I wrote, “Crockett and Bunce: A Fable Examined,” that debunked this story.

-snip-

The first part of the story gives a partially accurate account of Crockett's opposition to the relief effort. Mrs. Brown was the widow of a General Brown, a veteran of the War of 1812. The General contracted an illness during his service that ultimately led to his demise, but he went on to serve in the public sector until his death some years later. A lengthy debate took place in the House of Representatives on April 1, 1828, over whether or not to award public funds to Mrs. Brown, who was portrayed as an indigent mother in desperate need of assistance.

Gale's and Seaton's Register of Debates of the House of Representatives 20th Congress, First Session, records that though David cast a vote against the bill, he was not present for the discussion.

On April 2, however, he and Thomas Chilton (who would go on to help Crockett write his autobiography) spoke out "in opposition to the principle of the bill" and Crockett followed by "offering to subscribe his quota, in his private character, to make up the sum proposed."

Unlike the tale told in the Ellis version and on the web though, Crockett's opposition was countered by a spirited oration by Congressman Clark of New York. The motion for Mrs. Brown's relief was then carried by a vote of 97 to 74,with both Crockett and Chilton voting in the negative.

Perhaps the most egregious falsehood of the Ellis account is his rendering of Crockett's explanation of his vote and his encounter with Horatio Bunce. Bunce's opposition to Congressman Crockett is allegedly based on a vote Crockett made in favor of appropriations to the victims of a Georgetown fire. Crockett never made such a vote. The fire in question was not in Georgetown as stated, but in Alexandria, and the l9th Congress voted on the motion for relief for the victims on January 19, 1827. David Crockett served his first term in the 20th Congress, which convened on December 3, 1827 . In the spring of 1827, David was still on the campaign stump in Tennessee. He won the election in August of 1827.

Ellis also apparently confuses the widow Brown with the widow of naval officer Stephen Decatur. In 1830, Crockett was involved in a similar congressional debate over awarding some unremitted funds to Mrs. Decatur that her husband had claimed as bounty earned in a combat action. Crockett opposed the measure, but likely because of her reputation for profligacy and the fact that she hadn’t been married to Decatur when he’d won the contested prize.

Crockett typically considered petitions for individual relief on a case by case basis, but certainly wasn’t opposed to the government giving its wealth to his constituents despite what many of these websites claim.

His primary goal in congress was to acquire for his constituents legal title to the lands upon which they’d settled, and he petitioned the government repeatedly to provide this public acreage at little or no cost. Crockett was a tireless advocate for the poor, a populist who knew poverty firsthand, and he saw nothing wrong with government helping the little guy get ahead.

Thank you Chuck. I will comment on your post later.

Eric, Bill read your comments concerning him and asked me not to post it. It was a personal attack on Bill. SO, if you like please re post your links.

I will respond to this stuff later. I was exhausted after work yesterday and didn't want to do anything but relax.

With all this heavy snow I passed out fliers for roof snow removal and I have been running my butt off trying to get all the work done.

I will say one thing before I part here today. When I was a kid living on a farm in rural Wisconsin I knew of only one family who collected government assistance. All the kids on the school bus would pick on these kids because their parents were to lazy to work.

I was taught to be independent. I was taught you didn't have to be rich but you better damn well take care of yourself and your family without assistance from the government. In other words it is embarrassing for people like me to even consider government assistance.

In those days folk's could walk into a bank and get a loan based on your families credit history.

There is pride in having independence.

Oh yes, those wonderful days of yesterday when a man who was strong like bull and just as smart would be able to get a good union job at a factory and get paid a living wage.

But, your political friends destroyed all of that Bob. They thought it was terrible that people were paid a living wage and while they were in charge of the government stripped union powers and gave tax breaks to take jobs over seas. At the same while getting guys like you to say I want to be independent I hate the unions because they get pensions, and health insurance and high pay.

If you like the things the way they were in the 50's and 60's as far as high employment that came with high tax rates on the rich, strong union protections, a welfare program that came with social workers to give assistance to the families who were in distress and an unlimited stay on welfare if the people were just not capable of working for what ever reason there was.

But, that was bad wasn't Bob, so starting in 1968 with the election of Dick Nixon, through Reagan destroy the unions/tax cuts for the rich and ending with the GWBush lets not regulate anything at all; we have been undoing all of those social programs of the New Deal and the Great Society all of that socialism we had in the 50's and 60's have been wiped out.

Instead we returned to the great days of first the roaring 20's when the market was booming like crazy because we were taking all of the controls off of the market place and just like the 20's we went bust and we are smack dab in the middle of the 1930's again. High unemployment, bread lines and republicans telling you the problem is the starving man wanting crumbs from you instead of the fat cats who crashed the system and now aren't willing to pay for it.

St. Paul, Exxon Mobil complete deal to convert old oil tank farm into parkland

The 36 acres are part of a 65-acre parcel that had once been envisioned as Victoria Park, an 850-unit housing development.

The land was once the site of separate oil tank farms owned by Koch Refinery Co. and Mobil Oil Corp. Both companies ended operations there in 1995, and that's when neighbors and the city began to eye the land.
Koch sold its land, but Exxon Mobil didn't want to if the city was going to build housing on it. The company was concerned about future liability because of contamination.

When I first started arguing with the city council to help me with talking to RAP about the Bad insulation and the Bad furnace they installed in my home in September 1995, I stuttered so badly that I couldn't even speak on the phone and some times it took minutes to say the first word, and I tried so badly to try helping my self

I know here facts and real history matter almost as little as they do on Glen Beck but labor history:

"The changing conditions of the 1980s and 1990s undermined the position of organized labor, which now represented a shrinking share of the work force. While more than one-third of employed people belonged to unions in 1945, union membership fell to 24.1 percent of the U.S. work force in 1979 and to 13.9 percent in 1998"

And, I don't know what will convince you that many of the New Deal and Great Society programs don't exist any more because they don't exist to give you stat's. Anyone here remember the CETA grants of the 60's???

You do remember Reagan firing the Flight Controlers Union don't you?

Clinton and the GOP reaching the great ending welfare as we know it and cutting the time one can get benefits???

Those thing happened in the real world, maybe not here or in Glen Beck world.

But the US prosperity that most of the conservatives of today would like to go back to was brought to you by socialistic government programs, a pro-organized labor government and high tax rates on those making more than a million dollars a year.

Its just facts...

You were more interested in telling people about Jesse Ventura instead of accepting the help for housing, legal and mental health you needed. Unlike others, I went along with you and made copies of your video and paperwork for you to distribute since that's what you were more interested in.

Dave Thune's office and Sandy Pappas' office also has a record assisting you and then you turning on everyone and accusing all at one time or another being in conspiracy with Jesse Ventura. You threatened women to the point of needing restraint, you've harassed elected officials to the point of restraining order. You've made a complete joke of yourself which only hurts you and your cause. And, in your anger and confusion, you strike out at the ones who actually tried to help you. Get angry with yourself.

However, through all of that, in 12 years you never even attempted to go to the Republicans who's office was/is closer than the DFL's. Why not? What better way to get back at DFLers than to show them that the Republicans can do the job better, especially at something like social services which the DFL think they're better at? Go ahead, call those Republicans at 651-222-0022. Let us know how it goes.

You have made a killing off your liberal friends in government. Thune has thrown you how many bones at the expense of us, the taxpayers.

You stopped 35E, because it was in your backyard, but you don't lift one finger to stop the Central Rail that is going to divide our neighborhood just like the I94 did to our old Rondo. Double standard must be your middle name.

Bob,

Bill has attacked everyone but you on here. He's made racist comments about immigrants. He's made ignorant homophobic comments about Susan Kimberly, Norm Coleman, Dave Thune and others. He's accused me of being anti-American, a liar and plain ol' downright dirty. Screw him.

My response;
Bill signed his name to his comments, he owns the comments.

If you want me to delete Bills personal attacks on you Eric just give me the go ahead.

Personally I trust most folks have the intelligence to make rational observations of other folks personalities.

I was going to re post your comments about Bill. I shared the comment with him and we agreed I wouldn't re post the insults. I thought that was the end of it until I seen Bill posted your comments anyway. I told Bill he was asking for a fight and he got it!

Eric, It isn't fair to others here to insinuate Bill is representative of this group.

Bill doesn't attend meetings or have relations with any property rights advocates I know of.

This forum is diverse. From poor to rich, black, brown, white and yellow, poorly educated to highly educated.

Eric,

The comments are not meant to be insulting to you. They contain significant literary, artistic, political, and scientific significance.

Eric My battle is not with you, you keep coming back with the Democrats were the only ones that helped me and that's true to a point, until after people seen what the real battle with RAP"s work on my home was about, that's when they said don't help Bill any more.
You and most people reading this blog have no idea how long it took me to say the first word on the phone being that I stuttered all my life and a hard time just saying my own name.
That was my biggest disability because people didn't want to talk to a person that stuttered, so when I called asking for help to get that insulation problem resolved and if some one did follow through and not keep letting RAP tell people that there was nothing wrong in my home what so ever!
Jesse and Dean spoke about my home and then people started the listen, that house cause more headaches for all involved.
Wellstones office was told by RAP that I was I was a thief, liar and a extortionist, I have the recording left by Tom Lapitt, telling me he just watched 75 - 80 percent of LOOK AT RAP's WORK, the video I dropped off that morning and he said get two new estaminet on my home, and that was two weeks before they died in the plane crash.
The big thing with all concerned is that they put that same insulation in 200,000 other homes in Minnesota and while Ann Cook work for Sandy Pappas, Ann had my insulation tested and that is when Sandy told Ann not to help me any more, then Ann quit "Sen. Sandy Pappas" and she moved in with me and I have many witnesses to confirm what I said.
Now I'm speaking about the residents at the Sholom Nursing Home could be breathing in more gasoline fumes then you know and no buddy cares.
Stroke victims that might smell fumes and can't speak, do to the having a stroke
they might have ---> "MCS" Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, like I have to chemical smells?

My Thanks to Chuck and Eric for telling as much of the story as they did.

Bob,
Bill is not the only one who insults me. The vast majority of the poster here do. So, he's in lock-step with them.

My response;
And like I said, I'd delete any insulting comments you ask me to.
You say the vast majority here insult you. Who, that anonymous guy? A long time ago you and I agreed-ed it is better to let folks see people for who they are. You have asked me more than once to leave the insults stand.

Most of your opposition here is over housing issues. For yous who are new here housing is a highly emotional issue in Saint Paul. The city is facing a federal jury trial for implementing housing policies that have an adverse effect on minority neighborhoods. In some respects Eric is a city hall defender. Eric and Chuck have become the face of city hall here and fact is there is hundreds of folks here who feel the city screwed them out of their homes.
"I appreciate Chuck and Erics opinions even though I don't agree with a lot of what they have to say".

Over at Saint Paul Issues and Forums (a 501c non profit), against SPIF charter conservative voices of opposition are restrained and ostracized. Here the voice of the minority of opinion are revered!

I am insulted here also, that is life. Nobody can expect to throw their opinion out into a diverse community forum and not catch some flack. The strong survive here and the timid read.

You have thick skin Eric and know as well as I do that the truth still shines even through the verbal assaults.

It isn't easy hosting a community forum. At all times somebody is upset with me over how I host the blog. Being only human I like to think I don't do to bad a job. I guess the biggest rule here is our
"Truth seeking mission" Sometimes the truth hurts.
