They're off: The '07 race for local offices has begun
Dozens of potential city council members, school board members and mayors met Tuesday's deadline to file for political posts around the metro area.

Local races.
As the deadline to file for local elections passed Tuesday evening, dozens of people declared their desire to serve as mayor or members of city councils and school boards throughout the Twin Cities area.
Spirited races are expected in at least two east-metro cities -- Maplewood and White Bear Lake -- where City Council members have come under fire, and in the Roseville School District, where former Mayor John Kysylyczyn is part of a slate of candidates vying for school board seats.
In Maplewood, eight candidates, including two incumbents, filed for two open City Council seats. There, the council has come under some criticism after key city officials were dismissed in December as part of a $700,000 citywide budget reduction.
A former Maplewood city employee asked the Ramsey County attorney's office to investigate members of the council for alleged misconduct, but prosecutors denied that request.
In White Bear Lake, where seven candidates filed for three open seats, an attorney recently dropped a lawsuit against two council members that had accused them of violating open meeting laws.
Primaries will be held Sept. 11 to narrow the contenders in Maplewood, White Bear Lake's Ward 3 and in three of St. Paul's council wards.
All seven St. Paul City Council seats are open. Most of the candidates who filed, including six incumbents, have been campaigning for months as they head toward Election Day Nov. 6.
In the west metro area, Bloomington Mayor Gene Winstead, who has been in office since 2000, is one of the few Twin Cities area mayors up for reelection this year. He is being challenged by Jeff Andrews, who has been on the city's Traffic and Transportation Advisory Committee.
Talking education
At the school board level, Kysylyczyn, the former Roseville mayor, has said that his return to political life is no one-man show. He is part of a slate of candidates, he said last week.
At least one other Roseville school board candidate, Bryan Olson of Falcon Heights, who runs a website (www. falconheights.info) that monitors City Hall, said he was running with Kysylyczyn, but he declined to identify other running mates.
As mayor, Kysylyczyn had a lively term in office that saw him triggering ethics investigations and other controversies. Rather than run for mayor again, he sought a City Council seat in 2003, but finished third in the primary election.
Twelve candidates, including incumbent Tom Ring, have filed for the three Roseville school board seats up for election this fall.
In St. Paul, the race for four school board seats will include three incumbents: Tom Conlon, Kazoua Kong-Thao and Anne Carroll. Kong-Thao and Carroll have been endorsed by the city's DFL Party, as have first-time candidates Keith Hardy and Kevin Riach.
Conlon has run with the blessing of the city's Republican Party.
In the west metro area, at least two of the three Richfield school board seats up for election will be held by newcomers, because incumbents Marc Jenkins and Nancy Rowley are leaving the board.

The City wrote Sharon up for vehicles sitting in her backyard.
The City gave Sharon time to put tabs on her camper and van sitting in her back yard. Sharon purchased the tabs and didn't put them on the vehicles. The time lapsed the city allowed Sharon to get the tabs and they towed her car and camper. The only shame here is Sharon saying these awful things.
