A woman accosted outside of a St. Paul grocery store Saturday morning by two young men later rammed one with her pickup truck. The man quickly retaliated by pulling out a gun and shooting at her car, police and witnesses said.

Authorities arrested a 17-year-old after the incident and retrieved what they believe is the weapon. St. Paul police were looking Saturday for the second male.

The scene unfolded shortly before 9 a.m. at State and Cesar Chavez streets, in the heart of the District del Sol shopping area on St. Paul's West Side.

A middle-aged woman leaving the El Burrito Mercado market with grocery bags was approached by two men, who attempted to rob her of a necklace she was wearing, St. Paul police Cmdr. Mark Pearson said.

One of the men flashed a gun, but they eventually gave up and walked away when she resisted them, Pearson said. Moments later, she drove into the middle of the intersection and hit one of the pair with her Ford pickup.

Tomas Silva said the teenager must have fallen off the hood and landed in the street, but then quickly righted himself. Silva, the manager of El Burrito Mercado, was buying coffee at Blue Cat Coffee and Tea when the scene outside the cafe startled customers around him.

Silva said he saw the teen pick himself up off the ground, reach down and pull out what looked like a semi-automatic firearm. Silva said the teen fired three rounds at the pickup.

As business owners along the block called 911, the teen walked away but returned in two minutes to retrieve his shoe, which had fallen off in the commotion, Silva said.
The woman was not injured, but the pickup truck was damaged. "It looks like it was hit a couple of times, and another vehicle was also struck," Pearson said.

Police quickly fanned out across the area and arrested the suspected gunman, who was taken to Regions Hospital with what was believed to be minor injuries, Pearson said. The gun was in his possession at the time of his arrest. Police declined to release his name because he is a juvenile.

"What the county attorney's office likely will consider are charges like aggravated robbery and aggravated assault," Pearson said.

Authorities on Saturday were still looking for the second suspect, who they believe to be a juvenile or in his early 20s. The woman was not arrested.
