St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman wants another term
Coleman won't say whether he'll run for governor

Well-funded and armed with endorsements from nearly every elected official and big union in the city, St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman on Wednesday announced his bid for re-election.

Facing a dismal economic climate that is likely to force job reductions in City Hall, Coleman, a Democrat, emphasized the unity he's had with the entirely Democratic City Council.

"Governing in a democracy is never easy, but the immense challenges that we face in 2009 present obstacles few of us have ever seen," he said on the top floor of the Crowne Plaza hotel in St. Paul, flanked by supporters, including elected leaders and union heads. "At times such as these, it is more important than ever we gather around a single table and listen to those who challenge us to lift our sights, expand our vision and, when necessary, adjust our course."

Coleman, 47, a former City Council member from the West Side, is in his first term as mayor.

No other Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party member has announced intentions to run. Coleman is expected to report his campaign has about $100,000 on hand at the end of the month. And with endorsements that range from the firefighters and teachers unions to U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, he'll be the frontrunner in almost any field.

In 2005, Coleman ousted Mayor Randy Kelly in a hotly contested race in which each candidate spent roughly $1 million.

A $500-a-head fundraiser at the home of author and radio personality Garrison Keillor is in the works for later this month, and television ads — which would give Coleman visibility throughout the entire metro area — being contemplated.

Many have speculated that, like Norm Coleman (no relation) before him, Chris Coleman will use the St. Paul mayoral chair as a springboard for a bid for governor. Gov. Tim Pawlenty's term expires next year.

But unlike Norm Coleman, who announced his higher aspirations, Chris Coleman dodged questions on the topic Wednesday.

"We are focusing on St. Paul," he said repeatedly to members of the media.

Would he commit to serving a full term as mayor?

"We are focusing on St. Paul," he said again.

The reality of the economy will strike City Hall again next week, when leaders are expected to serve up ways to close a $5.7 million budget hole from 2008. Meanwhile, a $62 million shortfall is projected for 2009. In anticipation, Coleman has asked all city departments to draw up plans for 20 percent spending reductions — a measure that would almost certainly force jobs to be eliminated.

Coleman challenged lawmakers and Pawlenty to not solve the state's budget shortfall — pegged at $4.85 billion — by further cutting funding for local governments.

"One of the most significant failures is the failure to invest in our nation's cities," Coleman said.

The most significant union that has not endorsed Coleman is the Police Federation, which has clashed with him repeatedly during labor contract negotiations now destined for arbitration. President Dave Titus refused to rule out challenging Coleman but also dodged the question.

"I have a federation to run," Titus said. "That's where we're focusing right now."

Titus also acknowledged Coleman has a broad base of support.

"Clearly at this point, he is, by far, very re-electable," he said.

The only other announced candidate is Republican John Krenik.

I know there is EGGHEADS out there thinking "I can't believe he called the Mayor a MEATHEAD". Just my opinion.

Property rights advocates will not ALLOW you to be re-elected Chris.

And guess what, we have more money than you can ever hope to raise.

We are going to have a mayoral race like none other ever seen in this city. DOWN AND DIRTY

Bob, first you would need someone that can walk and chew gum...both...preferably at the same time...and know which was which... that would run against Chris for Mayor. That isn't going to happen. Money can buy you a lot of things but it can't make most of your "friends" achieve a level of consciousness that people would confuse with normal and or sane.

No matter what you want to say about Chris he has been doing an excellent job of managing an ever decreasing revenue stream being radically reduced by both the assault by the state and near depression economics.

This would not be a fun time to hold the rudder at City Hall.

Big time deficit, and the city is printing poems in sidewalks around town. Doing a whole bunch of other dumb stuff we could do without until we were able to afford it.

The crime statistics that are going down all over the US except Saint Paul.

All those women and children condemned out of their homes with no place to go. I will have these women and children come here one after another telling their stories why this MEATHEAD isn't fit to serve.

Chuck, this is just a start.

Corners are slipperier than last year the city isn't using as much salt. They don't plow as often. it's dangerous out there and the city is trying to save money at the expense of our safety.

This is your fault mayor.

When Mayor Coleman ran for election he told people working in his campaighn that he would stop the tactics used by Andy Dawkins with regards to inspections. After he got elected, he sat by while that behavior was ramped up. We gave you a pass Chris because we thought you would make a chnage. You are a traitor and this election cycle, we'll show you for what you are.

Sharon, I don't know and Gloria would never tell me who her clients are, but she represents clients who are divorcing or going through custody issues or domestic issues in Washington County. It is a private non-profit agency funded mostly by the United Way. That's why there is no requirement for her to live there, not a County agency.

To our landlords and property owners, renters and just anyone that tries to bring suit on St.Paul.

The city headed by Chris Coleman, city and county attorneys are on the side of their bosses.
Here are their famous last words, Frivolous litigation or say just plain Frivolous.
Does anyone beside Chuck and Eric believe this city is fair to all.

Randy if the big boys world is sitting in front of your computer all day collecting your general assistance check like most of the bloggers on this list, I guess not.

There is one difference between non-profits and for profit businesses... who is the stock holders. Non-profit businesses still pay plenty of taxes, just like the big boys do. The CDC I work for pays property taxes on the land it owns, just like private companies, we have the same requirement on payroll taxes same as for profits. The bottom lines have to balance the same. Remember corporations pay income taxes on profits made, the game in any for profit business is the same as an private individual, get the income and expenses to balance out, and then there is no profit and no corporate tax to pay.

At least two of the non-profits I am associated with own for profit businesses as a way of being able to better do their work. The profits (if any) created by the for profit business (after taxes) are able to be donated to the non-profit business.

So, eat a few more bon-bons Randy and remember how hard you have it.

Hi Greta,

Welcome to A Democracy Town Hall. The street I live on is a snow emergency. It was plowed both sides of the street before the snow emergency was declared. For blocks cars were ticketed for parking on this street AFTER the plows had gone by. DUMB

I still think that years ago Thune had the best idea about declaring snow emergencies. He wanted the City to blast the Civil defence sirens at 6 PM before the plows would be out at 8 PM. That would give everyone in the City notice that the plows were coming.

What was great about the idea, is if you weren't from around here or weren't paying attention to the news, when that siren went off you would know something was up and maybe you would turn on the news and find out Saint Paul had declared a snow emergency.

It really is a simple idea that would work, would save everybody a lot of money and would make sure cars were moved and that no one had an excuse for not moving their cars.

It was stopped cold by the fire department that didn't want "their" emergency sirens being used by the public works department. They argued that people wouldn't take the sirens seriously in the summer when tornadoes came if they were used in the winter for snow emergencies.

They argued that tornadoes are "real" emergencies. I remember Thune asking them, when was the last time the Russians invaded? (that was what the sirens were installed for) how many tornadoes have hit Saint Paul in the last twenty years (0) how much money has been spent on damage from tornadoes? How much money does the City spend on snow plowing??? How much money is spent on damaged vehicles because of bad roads?

Still couldn't get 4 votes for it.

I think Dave had a great idea. Cheaper than a phone calling system and you get the message no matter where you are in the city.

NOW, as everyone is aware, the sirens are tested at 1:00 pm the first Wednesday of every month. I hear the siren and I think, It's one o' clock the first Wednesday of the month!

Big snow, 6:00 pm siren, snow emergency, I better move the car. Makes sense.

It would be nice if Dave put this up for consideration again and get some input from the public. I think this is something we could support.

Yes Ralph, My name ( Bill Dahn) is well known as a person that doesn't back down from the Democrats that are in power.
I have the guts to fight the city, I just don't have money that the Union's will pour into the election.
The power struggle is in the from of us, against the Democrat Party and the DFL Unions that dictate their wired idea of life.
Political Parties that are for same sex marriage, that is government that apposes
GOD's WORD.
Some people think same sex marriage is OK.
But if GOD wanted it that way He would have named the His creation Adam and Steve, instead of
Adam and Eve.
We both know if I and others had the money that the DFL Union pour into a campaign, we could win hands down.
The Liars that run city all have their hands in the cookie jar, and pull any tactic they wish by having control of the COPS.

Bill Dahn, the guy that had his foot in the door and
up their -----!
Just ask Jesse, Norm, Skip, Dave, Chris, and Dean Barkley,
how does it feels
Bill Dahn the poor candidate.

Whatd'ya mean Thune's never earned an honest buck?

Submitted by Torque (not verified) on June 19, 2007 - 1:40am.
What about the time he used his city council position to lobby for Mortenson construction to get the contract to build the Excel Energy center? Whoops!!! Guess that ain't honest because he accepted a consulting position with them a couple of weeks later.

What about the money he made by going to other states and being paid to speak about smoking bans? Makes one wonder what else he's been paid by Clearway Minnesota.

What about using taxpayer money to fund patios for St. Paul's bars so they wouldn't go out of business when it was his own greed and stupidity that caused so many to go under in the first place?

What about the housing they okay'd on a former toxic waste dumping site?

Okay, you win, he hasn't made an honest buck.
