Mayor Coleman Releases Statement on the Governor's Veto of the Tax Bill

(Saint Paul) – Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman released the following statement today on the Governor's Veto of the Tax Bill.

“This veto is based more on partisan political posturing then the best interests of Minnesota or the residents of Saint Paul. As we begin the 2008 budget process, it is clear that the consequences of the Governor’s failure to provide property tax relief will be felt by every homeowner in Saint Paul in the coming months. The Governor’s decision to shift the fiscal burden onto local governments has left the City of Saint Paul with a $15 million dollar deficit, which has jeopardized our ability to continue investing in public safety programs and provide quality core services such as parks and libraries.”

Will be felt by every homeowner in St.Paul? Thats the problem there are 933 vacant properties that won't be contributing taxes this year and at the rate things are going that number will only increase, so now all the busy bodies that chased people out can pick up the difference on their taxes. Along with the businesses that are calling it quits for St.Paul.

If St Paul has a 15 Million dollar budget problem, then they have a 15 Million dollar spending problem....one they keep fueling like a bunch of drunken sailors. How about closing some of those parks and libraries Mayor? Better yet, sell them! there have been many many peole who did not have all the parks and libraries, etc that raised good families in the hosues that were in the same condition as the ones you now want to tear down, and they grew up to be fine people. Go ahead and raise the tax and see what happens at election time.

FOLKS, I had to choke this one down.

Let me get this right. The Mayor is blaming the Governor for higher property tax's and, we as citizens of Saint Paul get a cut in public safety while the City continues with all it's development plans for a light rail, and GREENING the City.

Wow, now that is partisan politics without any class.

Do you realize what you said Mr. Mayor? You want the public to think it is the governors fault you aren't addressing public safety.

Now, I am not a politician but if I were Mayor I think public safety would be priority one and the light rail and greening would be on the bottom of the list or cut all together.

We'll see what the citizens of Saint Paul think come next November when they vote on the City Council seats. You sure put your friends on the council in a Sh't bag on this one.

These people are so crazy it hurts to even think of them. All they ever do is talk about sustainable crap, green everything, and investing everything and they have policies that are driving the city to a place where it will take years to recover from. You think the city is bad now, I have some news for you...get out now while you still can.

65% of the City's general fund monies in the budget goes to police and fire. The last 35% pays for all of the parks, libraries and administrative functions of the City.

What the City isn't getting from the Governor is as much of our income tax dollars that you and I send to the state. A big chunk of the City's budget comes from that pot of money. So, instead of your income tax dollars going to help keep your property tax dollars down, the Governor would rather spend it in other parts of the state.

So, that is where the crunch is. If the governor doesn't let the cities have as much of your income tax dollars and instead spends it in the suburban or rural areas then the city either has to cut services or raise property taxes.

You can't use money that you are asking the Federal Government to give you to build a train to buy cops instead. You can't use money that the state has given you to fix a road to buy cops instead. You can try to ask the Feds or the State to give you cop money, but Bush cut the Clinton Cop money six years ago.

So, the City has a 15 million dollar whole in its budget and either, cops, or firefighters, or parks or libraries are being cut or property taxes are going up.

a 15million shortfall is going to look like lunch money after the lawsuits have a huge judgement against the city. They better start planning for it. And some should start planning for a stay in jail.
