What I would want to see is the council un-due what their right wing predecessors did before they undertake new business.
The people of this city voted for change. They worked for change and they thought they were going to get change based on what the candidates had to say for themselves during their campaigns. All I would want is for the people to get what they supported, worked, fought, and voted for and thought they were getting.
Presently, I seem to sense that they take a "aw shucks, let bygones, be bygones" approach. The current council offers nothing new or inventive, nor do they try to reverse the oppressive and wrong-headed policies of their predecessors.
The current council was proclaimed by the politically conservative writers of this city to be the most "liberal" in a long time.
What?
Liberal? ON WHAT PLANET?
How can anybody call them a gang of liberals when:
1. The present council and Mayor raised the property taxes on the people who are least able to afford tax increases totaling anywhere from 25% to 50% and more.
2. Allow the police to beat up anybody they want to from 5'3", 110 lb. women to eighty-four year old men and not a peep from any council member.
3. Turn their collective backs of the one of the most traditionally oppressed minority groups in this city.
4. Hob-nob with employers. While at the same time, offering vitually nothing to the suffering displaced workers.
5. Using public neighborhood improvement funds to assist (silence?) businesses that don't agree with their meager policies.
What we need is some liberated, out-of-the-box thinking and I simply don't see it.
For example: Dave Thune and his developer buddies want to turn the old 7th street brewery into some apartments and…guess what… a SHOPPING MALL!
This is not forward thinking, rather, its' the same old, tired lameness that stifles innovation. Sorry Dave, but there's nothing new here.
Why not turn the site into a Center for Universal Enlightenment and Advanced Political / Sociological Design, or at least something that the citizens of West End could use, afford and welcome? More tributes to greedy private capitalists we don't need as we all know whom, in the end, gets stuck with the bill.
When I half-heartedly, said that I was running for Mayor. I proposed the OPPOSITE of what we have now. My foundational idea would have turned this city completely inside out and upside down.
The foundational idea was to kick the city into the capitalistic mode while instituting, what might be called Socialism into the mix, financed, not by taxes, but by city run monopolies but modeled on private sector monopolies which we already have. I believe that the two concepts ARE compatible and possible.
The resulting revenues could be astounding!
We could see the cash flow directed towards the elimination of property taxes for both private businesses and individuals AND free energy to run those businesses and power homes in as little as five to ten years.
No longer would St. Paul businesses and homeowners receive a bill for ANY city service and downtown would be revitalized in the process! It would also allow the city to become a tourist attraction from ALL the neighboring states, as they don't have what I would install. By the way, this should even please the most ardent pro-business and fiscal conservative and finally put a smile on liberal faces as well. Free energy and no property tax statements, now that's quite a deal!
On this large scale, this is new and completely unheard of, anywhere in the country, to my knowledge.
I would like to see some bold and innovative thinking and I don't see it.
Why can't St. Paul be a leader in innovative thought, habits and practices?
Why are we so afraid to take bold steps into the national limelight?

Maybe you are not a Democrat Russ. Maybe you just think you are because what you describe is exactly all the things that Democrats do.
Raising taxes and using their Police to carry out their political agenda and racism is as Democrat as apple pie. Not that the Republican are much better, but with all your whinning about the abuse of minorities, how come you haven't said anything about the Federal Lawsuits concerning the city trying to rid the city of the minorities? How about the city privately meeting with the court to stack the deck against people before they even bring charges against them? These are issues that have been talked here for a long time and I don't remember you being a part of any of it. the only thing I ever remember you being concerned about is the Police eating the Fireman's lunch while the Fire Department was pulling someone out of the river.
I didn't think Russ would respond back. When there is a real fight to be had, he's busy hiding somewhere. He's more like the bullies that run the city, he likes to pick on people that can't or won't stand up for themselves.
